Twice the Talent: Mishcon de Reya’s Strategic Combination with Taylor Vinters

By Curtley Bale

The Story

Law firm Mishcon de Reya has announced a strategic combination with Taylor Vinters, a law firm with special focus on technology and innovation. Although this is not a merger, Taylor Vinters will rebrand as MDR Taylor Vinters, with a potential merger coming later down the line, after Mishcon de Reya’s IPO in London (Global Legal Post).

What It Means For Businesses and Law Firms

The combination will allow Mishcon de Reya to enter the innovation market, possibly gaining a foothold at a much faster rate than if it were to do so organically. Being based in the "innovation hubs of Oxford, Cambridge, and London", Taylor Vinters advised on "160 venture funding rounds" and "25% of seed-stage equity funding in the UK" in 2020 (Taylor Vinters). For Mishcon de Reya, it makes sense to combine with a firm that is already in a strong position in the industry. Each of the two firms will benefit from the expertise of the other, with Mishcon having access to the innovation sector, and with Taylor Vinters being able to take advantage of Mishcon’s larger resource network.

Although Mishcon is larger than Taylor Vinters, Taylor Vinters’ growth over recent years suggests that the firm is on an upward trajectory. Taylor Vinters has seen revenue increase 40% over the past three years - with revenue in 2020 reaching £21 million (CityAM). By comparison, Mishcon de Reya’s turnover for the year up until April 2021 was £188.3 million (Mishcon de Reya).

It is clear to see that both firms benefit from this deal This type of partnership may become more common as larger firms look to accelerate their entrance into niche markets, without the cost and time of an integrated merger.
