Lester Aldridge LLP - Summer Vacation Scheme

An opportunity to undertake a week long vacation scheme with the firm in June 2023.

This could be at any of the firm's offices in Bournemouth, Southampton or London.

This application is slightly different - the firm will select people for their vacation scheme places from training contract applicants who have indicated they are interested in a vacation scheme on their application form.

Apply here via their training contract application form by selecting "Yes" to the question "Are you interested in attending a vacation scheme with LA in 2023?" and completing the relevant questions.

Ward Hadaway TC App Question

Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of applying for WH TC and I'm a tad confused on one of the questions and the reason for it.
The Q goes:
1. Please give brief details of your non-academic activities and interests including positions of responsibility.
One of the other earlier questions:
2. What are your hobbies and interests?
I am confused as to how to differentiate the answers, because surely they will be similar?
In addition to this, how could I answer Q1 if I have never taken part in team sports/clubs (other than being a member of uni societies) and therefore never held any positions of responsibility?
As always I would be very grateful for your insights!

Allen & Overy to merge with Shearman & Sterling!

As reported by The Lawyer just now, A&O and Shearman have agreed to merge. This comes off the failed merger talks between Shearman and Hogan Lovells.

A&O will be the first magic circle firm to secure a foothold in the US market with a merger. I will be reviewing this development in this week’s Business of Law Firms, but needless to say this is one of the biggest and most exciting developments in the legal sector!

Confused about TC deadlines and conversion options for non-law students

Hi everyone!

I've been looking at TC deadlines recently and there seems to be a big divergence, with added confusion based on the change from the GDL to SQE, which not all firms have clarified their policies on.

I'm a non-law student who will graduate in summer 2024 - as I understand, the final year is the time to apply for TCs, assuming you've already had a vac scheme. But it seems a lot of the deadlines are built around penultimate year non-law students applying, rather than final ones.

It seems different firms recruit at very different times (and this might be related to what courses they want you to do before starting your TC) - so, for example:
  • Slaughter and May's 2025 TCs have closed already,
  • White & Case's are open from September 2022-July 2023 for their 2025/6 intake.
  • Clifford Chance's 2025-6 TCs seem to have closed for applications somewhere around Jan/Feb

Does it just vary substantially from firm to firm both when their TC app deadlines are (whilst it seems vac scheme deadlines were more clustered), and also how long the preparation/education period before you actually start your TC is?
  • White & Case, for example, seems to suggest on their site that it will only take 11 months of study with a partnered course before you actually start your TC there.
  • Clifford Chance, on the other hand, says you will first do a PGDL, then do an SQE prep course and their exam. I assume this would take longer than 11 months.

So, in terms of figuring out when to apply for TCs, does it just differ between firms as to how long they want you to study before you start training with them? Do you have to look at the different preparation programs they've come up with to understand which year you should be applying to start the TC in?
Consequently, it seems a lot of TC opportunities have already ended - would the second half of 2023 be better spent, then, with me applying for more vac schemes and trying to get recruited from there instead?

Thanks everyone!

Sponsored Paralegal work

Hello,

I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone could let me know of any firms (law or non-law in-house) in the UK that will hire a paralegal and provide visa sponsorship. I know this is not common, but I might as well push my luck and ask.

** At one point during my LPC last year, I was extremely ill and hospitalised with covid. I missed my exams because of this and then was no longer qualified to apply for the grad route visa. As I do not have this visa, my work opportunities in the UK have suddenly narrowed down to next to nothing and training contracts aren’t so easy to come by.

So anyone that is able to help or provide advice in anyway, I greatly appreciate it.
