TCLA General Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Does anyone have any advice on practising applying Porters' 5 forces for a case study exercise? I've been trying to integrate it when reading the news as I normally would but was just curious other creative ways people have practised it. Thanks :)))

Slaughter and May VS 2021/TC 2023 application

No I don't, I did try to get at it but he didn't say. I've heard they can challenge referees a fair bit honestly I have no clue.

Slaughter and May VS 2021/TC 2023 application

I didn't, my tutor emailed me saying that he had received an email from them to arrange a phone call later that day. He was emailing to ask for my transcript but other than that there was no way I would've found out that they had contacted my reference.

Can I probe this a little further? I have a little experience in litigation, and if I were to so some kind of disputes / litigation seat I think my work would be better and I would stand to give a better impression there. However, I have to tie this with the fact that in my VS interview, I was...

The first thing I'd say is don't worry too much that you felt you were informal - I think the interviewing style lends itself to that if I'm honest, as it very much felt like just a chat about myself. I spent the few weeks after my interview cringing at the "joke" I made, and everyday I'd...

Slaughter and May VS 2021/TC 2023 application

No idea, sorry. All I know is that they contacted my reference this morning and gave the offer in the evening.

Slaughter and May VS 2021/TC 2023 application

It'll be because its online - its generally accepted that forcing students to spend 3 weeks in front of a laptop isn't good for student nor firm. Think you'll see this replicated across the sector both this year and last.

Omggg that's a Slaughters vac scheme offer! Thank you to everyone here, including Jessica who gave such helpful feedback for my cover letter and Jaysen who started this whole thing, and made my first foray into law applications less stressful, and seemingly successful!!! Good luck to everyone...

They did, but they were worded a bit differently. Because I'm a non law student, the exact wording was "so youre doing History - what on earth are you doing applying for a commercial law firm then?" and "what do you know about Slaughter and May." He pushed me on both of my responses to these...

Thanks, that's good to hear. At the time I felt I did well and had a good rapport with them, now I've had time to think about some of my answers I'm less confident haha. Just make sure you know everything about yourself and your CV. They'll be a few curveballs and some questions where you think...

Pretty relaxed, just like they were having a conversation getting to know you. I don't think I got it because I'm trying to manage expectations and gave 1 or 2 answers that in hindsight weren't too great, but good experience regardless.

My bad, the firm in question has said they call references because they feel they get more out of it that way. Obviously you won't know, but could you take a guess at what they'd be trying to get at with this?
