Hi all,
Sorry for my prolonged absence. Had a holiday and then started working for a Lawtech company in June so have been busy.
Thought a quick write-up on education provider's response to the advancement of tech in the legal field may be interesting.
University of Manchester - Has launched...
Yeah - not sure how successful they will be as you have firms like Pinsent Masons opposing it, but I just found it amusing as an aside.
Feel free to do what you want with it! I'm just trying to make sure enough people know some of what was spoken about yesterday.
Question away - there will be tons I can remember from yesterday that I wasn't consciously able to write up, so might as well ask whatever you can think of and I'll be happy to answer!
Yeah - I like that these things are being said this early on too, hopefully it'll instill the right focuses...
I'm glad there is useful stuff in there! I did have some notes from the event, just irritating that I left some pages on a pad in the room during a break and then couldn't find it again after the break. Someone, somewhere, will have a few pages of utterly illegible writing.
Anyway, thought I...

Session 3
The afternoon session had an intense two hour session on the SQE.
To begin with Julie Brannan (Director of Education at SRA) began with a discussion about why the SQE is necessary. She highlighted the big drop-off of student...
Hey guys,
I was lucky enough to get taken along to this all day conference yesterday which featured both a cracking guest list and free breakfast & lunch, an all-round win really.
I thought you may find it helpful to hear a little bit about some of the things that were mentioned, as it'll...
Literally the same way you'd learn anything - just keep up-to-date on the news and attend networking events/talk to people from the industry :)
I think I wrote up another thread on websites etc you can use to follow news updates etc
Mostly pretty well thanks! Commercial exam threw up some awful question combinations which didn't work for me at all, pretty sure I fluffed that but other than that I'm happy with how it all went.
Now is the time for relaxing and going to enjoy the sun!
Hey everyone.
I know I said I’d do this back in March but then the final few months of my LL.B kicked into gear and I hibernated from life, mostly in the library. All done now, so thought I’d get around to writing this brief guide up on some of the tech magic circle firms are working on...
I am still around! Was in hibernation during last few months of law degree but all finished now so am back. In the midst of writing something else to put up too.
I saw that - it looks like a pretty interesting thing to get on. As mentioned above, it's closed for apps (I literally noticed it the...
Doubt there will be less need for trainees. Technology is unlikely replace the solicitor, merely make their job more efficient. As a result, will always need trainees to come into the firm. Think you may see a scenario where a trainee's responsibilities change from today but I'd be surprised if...
Sorry for such a delayed response, been away for the weekend and working since to try to catch up on other stuff. This looks great - will give it a listen :)
Yeah that is pretty interesting! As I said above, unless you really want to develop your own app/software, lawyers learning how to code isn't that necessary. However, if you feel like you have the time and motivation to do so, I don't see how it could hurt!
From a personal side, I'm not overly...
Hey, good to know it's useful! Yeah, the Legal Geek website is great but is a bit news-shy, which is where the other two come in. Legal Geek do have a massive conference in October (I think) but also run smaller events too. There's one at the end of March that they're running with ThoughtRiver...
I'm really interested in emerging technology as a wider topic. Find the entire area (Big Data, ML, AI etc) really fascinating and reading/thinking/talking about its developments is a particular passion for me. LawTech, given I'm in the final few months of an LL.B, seems to be a natural marriage...
Yeah Susskind likes to bring it up. Partly because it's a really great example of a closed-minded approach to technology but also partly because Susskind himself was mocked for suggesting emails will become the main communication method so I imagine he likes reminding everyone he was right.
As...
I thought it may be helpful to have LawTech resources placed in one thread.
People can use this thread to post any interesting websites/podcasts/books/articles etc that they come across that they feel may be of interest to others.

Based off the interest from the other post, I thought it’d be good to begin writing up some information on this area. This is a project of passion rather than expertise, so I’d recommend, if anything does interest you, to read around the subject yourself.
This post is meant merely as a rough...
