TCLA General Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

The issue here is that there is no longer a standard time or order. Course lengths vary (where the course is not compulsory to qualification), meaning lead in timescales also vary. To complicate matters, although many firms are asking their trainee to complete SQE 1 and 2 before they start...

Any advice on how to do things differently in new year

Hi there - does anyone have any advice on how to do things differently in a new year on applying for TCs? Is it a matter of seeking new opportunities and thinking about what new legal experiences we can add to applications? After all, if we have not secured a TC we don't want to repeat the...

Covid 19 and safety net policies

Good afternoon all, I'm currently an LPC student at Ulaw and am looking for some advice. I did the GDL in the pandemic and decided to go straight on to the LPC just to get it done so I can start working. I've done about 12 vac scheme applications this cycle and been rejected from all of them...

Using the gap between finishing the GDL and starting the LPC (a nice problem to have!)

Relax, enjoy not having to concern yourself about things. The whole purpose of a training contract is that they will train you up during it. Only pursue the interests/knowledge you want to pursue / it’s unlikely you will have this luxury again for sometime.

    LPC - ULaw v BPP

Thank you! I heard elsewhere that some students faced issues during covid, how have you found BPP's organisation?

    SQE - general discussion

But that is exactly my point. If you can withdraw from this course with no/little cost, why not wait until you know which firm you will be working for until deciding whether to do the SQE or LPC based on that firm’s preferences. What is the rush in signing back up to either course?

    Advice

@lola15167 I am so sorry to hear you’re feeling like this, but honestly, same boat. I got BCC at A-Levels (and an A for general studies which I occasionally dropped in there to make it seem not all too bad). I also just turned 25, working as a paralegal at a MC firm, and full-time student with a...

    LPC Grants - Taxable income?

Hey - I've passed this onto our accountant to see if they can shed any light on this.

Using the gap between finishing the GDL and starting the LPC (a nice problem to have!)

There's a number of really interesting suggestions in here, some of which had never previously occurred to me but which I'm now going to look into - particularly the idea of tutoring pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. So thank you for the very generous and helpful response! Again thank you...

    LPC Grants - Taxable income?

I would have thought they would count as an educational grant which aren't taxable given they're purely for support purposes whilst we're studying and vaguely remember reading a link that confirmed that let me see if I can find it. Edit 1: Just seen @Jaysen's response which seems to confirm...

TCLA General Discussion Thread #2 (2021)

This was very helpful to read thank you. Would you say doing the LLM PPRR report is do-able in a week? I'm planning on doing it the same way as you did as keeping up with 4 electives is quite a lot at the same time as working part time and I'd rather not do the LLM report on top of revising for...

    LPC full-time & working part-time / LPC part time & full-time work?

Hello! I am currently enrolled in the full-time LPC at BPP (over 3 days) and am not working, so I can only give you a bit of my advice! For the full-time programme, it is advised to treat it like a full time job. That is, doing school work for 40-45 hours a week depending on how much material...

2020-21 Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion

The SQE makes your position complicated. Is the opportunity you are applying to a traditional TC (eg where you will need to complete the GDL/LPC) or a SQE training opportunity?

Ask TCLA's New Community Managers Anything!

Hi Avni, Hope you are doing well. By way of introduction I am a final year law student in India. Will graduate in May 2023. I am keen on applying for vac scheme/training contract positions at international law firms. However, I am unsure as to what I am eligible for at this stage and whether...

    Ask A Graduate Recruiter Anything!

I don’t think it is a case of one being automatically better than the other. It will depend on how else you are building your CV up alongside working/studying, and obviously what job you end up doing.

Using the gap between finishing the GDL and starting the LPC (a nice problem to have!)

I think the answer to this depends on the kind of person you are. If you're really going to get a lot out of relaxing/enjoying the time off then you should definitely do that. However, it feels like this isn't the advice you're asking for since you want something that would serve you well in the...

    2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

Sorry when I said "type of firm" it was used quite loosely. I think you have to be aware that different firms are taking different approaches to the SQE training model. For instance, Reed Smith are taking an approach that you work and study part time while completing SQE 1 and 2 (in a combined...

    LPC or SQE?

Many thanks, Jessica! To be honest, I never considered the GDL/LPC route outside a TC contract. I applied for TCs in order to (1) avoid self-funding the QLTS and (2) minimize the risk of qualifying through QLTS and then not being able to find an associate position because I would compete with...

    Ask A Graduate Recruiter Anything!

In many ways it won’t be any different to a law student. The expectations of technical legal knowledge will be slightly different but considering law students are often taken on before they have done the LPC, then there isn’t always high expectations of that knowledge anyway. It’s very...

2020-21 Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion

Thanks, Jessica. I think I can convey that better in writing in an application, but I find it harder to do when it is a timed VI. I just struggle with the structure and the fact that my story is a little different. I am a NQ barrister with just 6 months under my belt. I realised pretty early on...
