TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I did two VSs this summer and secured a TC from one and I’m still waiting for the outcome from the other and I am 28! There are others on the forum who have failed one year and applied to the same firm again and been successful. Some firms won’t reinterview but there are plenty of others firms...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Now that I have had a couple of days to let it sink in I can say that I have (finally) received a TC offer from one of the VSs I undertook this summer. So even if the other firm says no when I hear the outcome I still never have to do another TC application again! Thanks to @Jaysen @Jessica...

the GDL wont be a waste, most law firms are asking that non-law graduate do the PGDL prior to the SQE. I wouldn't self-fund the LPC, as someone that has just finished the LPC I am being told by some firms I would have to SQE2, I only did the LPC as I did it part time starting last year prior to...

This is a tough decision. Do you have a gut feeling? I’m a big believe in gut instinct - it has always worked out well for me. Alternatively flip a coin - when it’s in the air you will know which way you want it to land and that says a lot! From a personal point of view - I would choose...

Yes of course you can put it on your CV! I'm just not sure it has any weight beyond showing a general interest in the legal profession much like joining law society at uni, unlike a VS it doesn't have a competitive application process or assessed element to it etc.

I wouldn't consider it work experience as you aren't really doing anything - shadowing is just watching. It will give you an insight into the work but be aware that the type of work paralegals do hugely varies - at some firms they may do little more than proof read and print documents, others...

I would separate like this - for experiences where I can give tangible examples of how my role changed or improved something and delivered results or was an award i’d put in the second. if my position didn’t have a tangible result or I just participated I’d put in the first.

I take what I would normally take in my work bag so water bottle notebook pen wallet keys and whatever lipstick I am wearing that day. law firms love a branded item so will likely give you a branded notebook and pen on day one but I always bring one with me in case they don’t.

You could. I would also look at the amount of inter-office collaboration and cross border work though. International reach doesn’t really mean anything if they have 50 offices but they all keep the work to themselves and the London office only does UK based work for UK based clients.

It will probably vary from firm to firm and probably both, PE may fall under the general corporate banner or M&A! Take a look on a few firms websites and I bet people listed under PE practice will also have M&A listed. It's unlikely to be a clear cut distinction and again different firms will...

It's a sovereign wealth fund - so a state owned investment fund. This doesn't make it a public company, unless the public can buy/trade shares in it. I'm not sure that a PE transaction and M&A transaction is really a clear distinction, surely a PE transaction is often a type of M&A transaction...

I'd be honest, it shows your integrity and it is not at all unusual for people to undertake multiple vacation schemes. I can't see how this would be a trick question at all.

Help buying/choosing professional clothing (especially for women)

Thank you so so much for taking the time to do this - definitely given me some inspiration. I think loafers are probably going to be the best option for me, even a mid heel could be a problem, I sometimes have to use a walking stick. I think a trip into town tomorrow is in order to find...

Hey all, I have a couple of vac schemes coming up and I'm really struggling on the shoe front! I used to wear heels daily however a lot has changed for me since covid and daily office trips and I now cannot wear heels, I also cannot wear really flat shoes with little support so pumps are out...

Clifford Chance, Latham and HSF reimburse in full. don’t know if that will change as they transition to SQE as some firms are expecting LPC grads do SQE 2. Not all firms do though. Likely because they have specific LPC providers they use and probably get a better price than self-funders.

    MoFo 2022 Summer Scheme

Hey, I don't have anything to add other than to say being nervous is completely natural! I have my first two VSs coming up shortly (they are one straight after the other as well) and I am definitely feeling the nerves!

I wouldn't rule them out yet - the deadline hasn't passed and they are non-rolling. Also my experience last cycle was that they took a long time to get back to people.

It isn't much lower than the LPC pass rates which are around the 57/58% mark.

TCLA General Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

This is a very subjective question. For some it will be really hard others not so, much like any other course/exam. The pass rate is roughly similar to the LPC. I personally hate closed book exams so I’m hoping the fact I’ve almost finished the LPC means whoever gives me a TC doesn’t want me to...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I’ve said it several times on this forum but everyone judges themselves in a much harsher manner than anyone else would. Something I do to bring myself back down when I’m spiralling/over-thinking something I have done is apply what I call the friend test - how would I judge a close friend that...
