    Career changer - strategy

Hi Kubed There has already been a lot of good advice here but I thought I would provide my opinion as a career changer who secured a TC in August 2020 after starting my application journey at the start of 2019. I am 32, I graduated in 2012 from a non-Russell Group uni with a low 2.1 and very...

Also having reached interview last cycle, I agree that MdR is fine. They refer to themselves as MDR on their website as they have programmes like MDR tech and MDR Lab, so I figured they must not mind being referred to as this. Just be consistent throughout your app if you decide to do this.

How to stay motivated when you keep getting rejected

Yes of course. This is the diary that I use (link here). It is quite expensive for what it is... you could just use any old notepad but I have linked it so you can see the layout. It's quite cheesy but in the 'positive affirmation' section I wrote "I am a trainee solicitor" and in the "I'm...

How to stay motivated when you keep getting rejected

I agree with this - mindset is so important! A friend of mine said something to me a couple of weeks before he was offered a TC which is ingrained in my mind. He said something like "wherever I end up, they will be so lucky to have me". My initial reaction (at the time) was wow this guy thinks...

I've have done a similar thing with open days in the work experience section. I would always include one or two lines to explain to the recruiter what I liked about the open day, what I didn't (not in so many words) and how that has led to me applying to the firm that I am applying to now. For...

Hey I would think that many firms deliver premium legal services on challenging matters whilst providing sound business judgment. Why would clients pick Dechert over any other firm with a similar profile? I would have a look on their website firstly to see what they appear to be proud of in...

Hiya You can always ask for your Watson Glaser report from HL. I emailed and asked for mine, saying I wanted to understand where I can improve on the WG test. This was the message I received back: "Please find attached a copy of your Watson glaser report. Unfortunately you were not successful...

I've seen advice about looking at the Linklaters competency framework and trying to answer the questions in line with the competencies Linklaters is looking for, and I thought about doing that, but I decided against it and just answered the questions 100% honestly. I don't think there is...

Hi Tanvi Sorry to hear that. My observation is that Links place more weight on the CAPP test than the Watson Glaser when deciding who to invite to AC. I say that because I scored in the 65th percentile last cycle and was invited to AC, and I've heard people have made it to AC with lower...

Can I continue my current career if I accept an offer for Training Contract commencing in 2022/23?

That is interesting. If grants are usually around £10k per year, I don't see how firms could reasonably expect future trainees not to have at least a part-time job. £10k is very generous, but it wouldn't be enough to cover everything for those who need to rent in the capital.

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

Practice/Practise - I confused these until this year. To help with proofreading apps, I found it really helpful to highlight the text and click "speech" so that the computer actually reads the writing back to you. My computer sounds horribly boring and monotonous, but it helps me notice typos...

    Linklaters 2019/20 Application

I took hours to do both the CAPP and the WG last cycle too as I kept taking breaks. I was a little paranoid that they would wonder why I am so slow, but I was still invited to AC.

I would 100% update my application if I were you. I had a telephone conversation with grad rec at MdR after I failed the case study which was the third stage (passed app and the VI). They encouraged me to reapply but said "whatever you do, do not send in the exact same application!" What was...

I've received the following feedback after a number of TC/VS interview rejections: 1) Looking at a case study from too much of a commercial standpoint and not thinking about how the firm can assist the client including cross-selling different departments 2) Not expanding enough and showing my...

Can I continue my current career if I accept an offer for Training Contract commencing in 2022/23?

Hi Hollie The GDL and the LPC are both year long courses, unless you do the accelerated LPC which is about 6 months long I believe. I haven't studied either, but I think it would be difficult to work full time until your TC starts as the courses are pretty full on from my understanding. Also...

    Ask A Graduate Recruiter Anything!

This is the approach I take too. I also question whether the paragraph would still make sense if I crossed out "commercial law" and replaced it with any other job role like banking/consultancy etc. If it still makes sense, it's probably not specific enough to commercial law.

How to chose which firms to apply to?

Just to add to the above, I attended a webinar this summer and someone from grad rec said that you really shouldn't be talking definitively about the culture of a firm because you cannot get a true sense of this from a dinner, event, or even an open day. Perhaps if you have already completed a...

They could easily have sent a blanket email update...to be honest I haven't been that impressed with their communication. I wasn't able to get feedback after my last AC there as they kept ignoring my emails and I just felt too embarrassed to keep asking.
