I spent so long always trying to get 'valuable' work experience that would add to my TC application that I wanted to make sure I did something that is more suited to my interests or more flexible etc so I have more time to concentrate on hobbies once I got a TC and had the one year to fill. So...
Sorry for inserting spam but I have just launched a mentoring initiative covering various corporate sectors (including law) so if anyone wants to sign up for a mentor / be a mentor then please do!

just a note on this, I applied to Skadden also but earlier in the year I asked their graduate recruitment manager if they do actually consider direct TC apps regardless of them accepting the apps. And the answer was that they don’t look at them unless they don’t fill the places (11/12 places)...
I have a friend who is an associate at a big law firm who is 30 and did the very traditional route of vac scheme in second year then TC offer. Her boyfriend, who is also 30, just qualified this year. It is not a defining characteristic that he qualified a bit later, and now they're pretty much...
I have a feeling that was their last AC. I know they do two direct TC ACs a year and they had one in April/May and then one this week. But they did say to me that if they couldn’t fill the spaces from this AC then they would do another one but I’m not sure how many spaces they had to fill.
I’m sure you’re all sick of me asking about Macfarlanes every other day on the forum but for once I bring some good news.
I just got offered a training contract!!
What a journey.

This is a bit vague - if a firm asks you to perhaps speak about a deal you found interesting, what kinds of factors could you discuss for the deal to be interesting? I have a few in mind but there isn't a huge amount of detail on the deals and I have found them interesting maybe...
Hi @Jessica Booker
I know that the smart way to answer a question like 'which other firms have you applied to' is to group them either by size or practice area to show some rationale.
My focus has usually been on the funds/PE side of firms so quite US heavy but then two UK firms that also...
Hi @Jessica Booker
Just wondering your view on this - do graduate recruitment/partners at interviews ever think perhaps someone has too much going on to concentrate on a career in law? e.g. if they have different projects going on that they're doing simultaneously.
I contacted them at the start of August when I was told that there has been a lot of application screening happening at the time so shouldn't be too long till we hear back.
That was a few weeks ago so would be fab if anyone else had any more recent updates from them
I actually emailed them in April and was told to apply sooner rather than later as they were about to start considering the direct TC apps. So I applied the next week. Then emailed for another update in June and was told they will get back to applicants after the deadline.
So just to add to...
Email from Akin Gump:
Thank you for your application for a training contract at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.
Due to the success of our 2020 Vacation Scheme we are no longer able to offer interviews for our 2022 training contract. However, if you are still interested in joining us, please...
I emailed a few days ago and was told they are currently screening applications. They have been extremely busy because of covid and just finished their summer vacation scheme
omg really? and didn't send an email out to those who applied already...how weird. I emailed them end of June and got a response saying they will get back to people after deadline of 13th July so have just been casually waiting for that to come around lol!
