How important are the A&O Shearman application questions?

Mitigating Circumstances
is it necessary or useful to provide mitigating circumstances if your grades weren't necessarily affected? My grades have remained fairly consistent before, during and after my circumstances. It did affect my grade but I was still able to maintain a 2:1 in affected subjects, and I'm not too keen...- alohamora

How important are your grades when it comes to a Vac Scheme?
A lot of students from my batch have a first, or a strong upper second. This is mostly because my batch is pretty competitive and also because we were graded very liberally so far. So while I have a first, when stacking my grade percentage against others, I am ranked just slightly above average- alohamora

What is considered mitigating circumstances?
I wanted to determine at what point my concerns might sound whiny versus being legitimate. My case wasn't very serious, but I was hospitalized during my mid-semester exams, which constituted 25% of my total grade. This affected my ability to study and write some of the papers.
