Hi all, fortunately been offered a VS with a US law firm.. how hard is to get a TC from this position?

Hey! I think it varies a lot from firm to firm - factors such as trainee intake, vac scheme intake, whether they consider direct TC applications alongside VS candidates will impact this. Definitely don't lose hope though. Everyone in my summer VS at a US firm was offered the TC - just focus...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Hey! Im a future trainee at Latham so hopefully this helps :) I found the written exercise to be very time pressured to be honest. For my AC personally, there was no legal elements at all, it was more of a business report(?). There was a lot of documents to read so make sure you identify which...

Hey guys! Just wanted to say best of luck for this cycle! I did 3 application cycles (with lots of rejections) before getting my TC so feel free to DM me if you need any help / someone to moan to :) YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Hi! Not Jessica but I thought I would weigh in! Its absolutely fine to be interested in a department without having worked in that sector before. However, you should avoid just stating that you enjoy Finance/disputes. Try to dig deeper into why you like those departments. i.e. Do you enjoy the...

Not Jessica but this sounds like a great example of innovation so I would use it again if you want to. However, I would consider redrafting your answer and make sure you use the STAR format if appropriate (not sure the exact wording of question).

Hey, future trainee at Latham here :) I personally didn’t. From what I gather, this question is combining ‘why this firm’ and ‘what makes Latham different from other firms’. I’m sure you wouldn’t be penalised if you did mention other firm but I really don’t think it’s necessary.

    Reuse part of HSF application

If it is still a topic that interests you, I would say so yes! My advice would be to try and refine/redraft your answer anyway - if there is even another line of analysis/explanation to strengthen your answer it will be worth it :)

Just to let you know, you can autosave your modules/results and other information on apply4law so that it appears in every application! I think it is called MyLocker or something like that. It will save you a lot of time!

Just wanted to give my two-cents. Like others have said you absolutely do not have to have those accolades to get a TC at a top firm. Personally, I got A*AB, didn't get top grades at uni or go to Oxbridge and I am a future trainee at a US firm. Further, there are people in my intake with no...

Yes, I would say so! I would try and write about 250 words for each, but don't worry if you write slight more for one part!

Hey! Don't worry about being nervous! Everyone feels nervous before ACs :) My advice would be to remember why you were selected for interview. Grad rec clearly saw something in you - whatever you think those qualities / skills are, remind yourself of that (even if It means saying it in the...

Not Jessica but in general, the majority of applications are sent off in the week of the deadline, if not the deadline itself. I think if you sent off your app before the 22nd October you would be positioning yourself very well!

Just to chip in, I don't think this question will be the deciding factor for your whole application! To build on what @Jessica Booker has said, you have attended a couple of events so just expand on these a little more. If you pick out a couple of things that stood out to you (i.e. you learnt...

How to get more legal experience and get a legal role?

@dangelataher For most firm-specific open days, you will likely to have to apply. However, I imagine many application deadlines for open days have still not passed, so you have time to apply! If you don't want to apply to open days, you can also attend webinars hosted by the firm itself or...

    Open Day Application

You could also mention things like pro bono, specific diversity initiatives, the culture, etc. I attended the open day last year and we took part in an interview skills/application workshop - you could mention you want to develop your skills/strengthen your application before applying to the...

Hey! If you are asking this in reference to the VS app q I would be happy to help! (I got to AC last year :) ) I would start by looking at who the firm's competitors actually are - maybe check rankings on Legal500 for its main / most profitable practice areas. Then try to work out how Dechert...

I applied last year and was successful! In my app, I wrote about their PE practice - detailed what I founded interesting about the area and what I wanted to learn more about latham's expertise in this particular area. I concluded by stating how learning about the area at latham would help me...

Definitely worth asking. Alternatively, you could ask the firm to transfer you VS app to a direct TC app. I was allowed to do this with 2 firms last year.

How to get more legal experience and get a legal role?

Just to echo Jessica's point, plenty of applicants have secured TCs at top law firms with little to no legal experience- its all about leveraging your skills and communicating those in an impactful and convincing way. I think your approach sounds great - I personally found open days to be so...
