    is it normal to prepare a little gift e.g., small chocolates or for xmas a mini panettone for your vs provider? in my culture it's customary to do it but unsure of whether it's polite to do in London firms

    There is absolutely no need to do this - the vast majority of vac schemers wouldn't do it.

    Some do though - if you do, really a card is sufficient, there doesn't need to be a gift with it. If you do go with a gift, give something that is small, low value (e.g. less than £20) and sharable in the office.
