I personally spoke about diversity in my application and got through to assessment centre. But you're right, I had been to the firm before and backed it up.A scenario in which I would say to not necessarily rule it out is when diversity/inclusion defines the firm or they define themselves that way . I'd say Linklaters do this heavily for example. But I did it with HSF because one of their slogans on their brochure literally was about inclusivity. They kept repeating it in their material which gave me the confidence to say, they must care about it, therefore my attraction to them on that basis is strong.
