Hi, I am a UCL non-law graduate with a low 2:1. I have done GDL and passed SQE1, waiting to sit my SQE2 in Jan. Applying for law firms is currently my full-time job. After attending over 50 law firm events, I am very insecure and anxious about my grades. I am wondering if the low 2:1 will be a barrier for me to get a tc from top law firms (US law firm specifically). I cant sleep because of that. I really want a TC in 2026, and I am trying my best. I know some firms are quite strict with grades.

You're definitely not alone in feeling this way - it's totally normal to worry about grades, but a low 2:1 doesn't automatically close doors, even at US firms! There are plenty of examples of candidates securing TCs with similar profiles as they have demonstrated drive, commercial awareness, and a strong narrative about their journey into law and motivations. There are some firms that are stricter with grades, but these are the minority, and most firms are simply looking for a 2:1 overall.

You've also achieved a lot! Alongside your 2:1 from UCL, you have already completed the GDL and SQE1 which boosts your academic profile. Keep attending events and building genuine connections - those relationships and insights often matter more than a single grade boundary.

When you apply, I'd focus on why you're a strong fit for that specific firm and back it up with evidence from your experiences. US firms do value academic excellence, but they also look for resilience, independence, and commercial edge - all of which you are already showing!

Thank you so much for your response. I’ve completed an internship at a US law firm, another at a VC startup, and I’m currently working as a brand ambassador for a commercial news platform. I’m hoping that these experiences can help make up for my grades.

I’ve avoided applying to firms that are known to be very strict about grades, and I’ve made a list of the ones I plan to target. Still, I can’t stop worrying — it feels like I might get screened out straight away, no matter how strong my application is.

I’m not sure if I’m overthinking, but I really appreciate your advice and reassurance. Thank you again!
