Apply to open days to firms that you're curious about, as this will really help when you start applying next year. Try also to schedule some calls with future trainees / current trainees through Linkedin that went to Exeter to learn about their experience. Personally, I did a lot of pro bono work and clinics in first and second year due to genuine interest, but I found that this was super helpful in my applications because a lot of the skills you learn are essential for being a lawyer (drafting, working under pressure, managing your time, working with others and collaborating...). So I would recommend applying to pro bono clinics in exeter, if you have a university clinic, or any other clinic that is looking for volunteers! I think also have a look through the different TCLA forums and resources as they really serve as a great way to introduce you to commercial law!
Hi, I think it's great that you are forward-looking! You should definitely use first year as a year to learn more about what you are genuinely interested in (practice areas, what type of law firms, solicitor vs barrister etc..) and attending different events to deepen your understanding.
