Hey @LawbeginnerSeptember2025! First things first, huge congratulations on starting at Exeter this month. I hope that you take the time to absorb it all in and enjoy the transition to university life! It is also great to see that you are already thinking about training contracts and vacation schemes, but I wouldn't worry about them too much just yet. As mentioned by some of the other forum members in this thread, as a first-year student, you are not usually eligible for training contracts or vacation schemes. However, a lot of firms offer first-year schemes that you will be able to apply to. For example, you can check out the Hogan Lovells Launch Pad Scheme or the Freshfields First Years Insight Scheme. The best way to find more schemes would be to search for something along the lines of 'UK law firms first year scheme' on Google! Completing an insight scheme is a great way to get to know the firm better ahead of applying for TCs and vacation schemes next academic year, as well as practise your application writing and interview skills. I would also recommend pursuing extracurricular activities, such as joining university clubs and societies. Law firms look for transferable skills and a demonstrated interest in specific aspects of commercial law, such as collaboration, problem-solving and analytical capability. You won't regret developing these skills through extracurriculars! I hope that you find this useful, and good luck!
