It is useful to be able to attend firm networking events in London, but this would also be possible to do on occasion from Cambridge. Drawing from my personal experience, when I applied to schemes I was based in Bristol. My strategy was to make the most of online events (of which there are so many!), and strategically select the most important events to me to attend in London.
