Hiya @RgA Really glad to see more career changers on this forum (especially those coming from public service backgrounds!). 20 years in policy and government certainly gives you a wealth of transferable skills. As mentioned in my previous response, it might be helpful to get some exposure to the London (or broader UK) legal market and explore different areas of commercial law to see what most aligns with your interests. Given your policy background, areas like public law, financial regulation, or competition/antitrust might appeal to you, but I don't think you should feel any pressure to narrow down your interests yet. If you're not already on LinkedIn, I'd also really recommend it. There've been some excellent, high-profile trainees who've switched into commercial law after experience in government, policy, and local authority work (would highly recommend following Netty Yasin - she's incredible, and you can read an interview with her here!). Reaching out to people working in firms or practice areas I was curious about made a big difference in helping me understand what the day-to-day actually looks like. You’d be surprised by how many people are willing to share advice! Good luck with your applications!
