Cv dates

I had a question about a role I put down on my cv. I was a course rep in uni during first year and I was re-elected during second year of uni. I put down on my applications and cv that I was a course rep from October 2019- June 2021.

I was a first year course rep from October 2021 to June 2020. I was then re-elected in October 2020 and my role finished in June 2021.

I was wondering if I need to include the exact dates when I was a course rep during both years? Or the dates I put down is fine?

Bad grade in module

I am worried about a module I performed poorly in during my third year of law school. I got a third in IP which really shocked me because I achieved 2.1s and 1sts in all my other modules (with the exception of one 2.2 during first year). Luckily, I still graduated with a 2.1.

I am in process of applying for paralegal roles. I am worried I will be turned down for a paralegal role when they found out that I have achieved a third in a module during my last year in law school.

Last year, I worked as a paralegal in-house. I was lucky that my day to day tasks did not involve any IP work. I am avoiding applying to IP paralegal roles or any in house paralegal roles that require good knowledge of IP law. I know I will be turned down for those roles because of my grade in IP law.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

Paralegal interview

Hi all,

I have been invited to an interview for a Paralegal role. I have been told the interview will involve reviewing my cv in detail. This is my first official interview for a legal role and I haven’t experienced a cv based interview before.

I have heard sometimes interviewers ask you to talk through your cv. I was wondering if anyone can give me any tips on how to approach this question. Do I speak about the skills I have gained from each role and then explain how it links to the role I am applying to?

Low 2:1 vs mid/high 2:1

Hi there,

I have just received a 62 on my first summative (which was the coursework element of a module worth 50%). I am slightly disappointed as I did aim for more of a mid/high 2:1, given from current research on law firms as well Slaughter & May would be one of my top picks as well (I.e. a firm that is notoriously more picky with the specifics of grades!).

Am I correct in thinking that, from my understanding, Slaughter & May’s “strong 2:1” requirement is to be understood in specific, actual numbers as 65% and above as an overall across modules? How much would individual modules play a part in this process (I.e., would one low 2:1 module with a 65%+ average overall be a significant hindrance?)? Would a low 2:1, be it as an average or in individual modules, compared to getting a mid/high 2:1 be of a significant detriment to for example other MC/SC/US firms that appear to have less stringent grading requirements?

Thank you in advance guys to any one for providing assistance to me regarding my queries

Prep material for AC?

I had my first ever AC day at a US firm recently and got the rejection today. It was my first time doing a law firm AC and found it quite tricky, having never done anything like that before. I was fine with the competency but I wasn't really sure what the strategies should've been for the Competition case study (group exercise) or the discussion surrounding a fictional contract for a record company client.

Where can I find practice materials to prep for these?

Hogan Lovells Summer Vacation Scheme 2024

Hey everyone!

I applied for Hogan Lovells' Summer Vacation Scheme in Nov and did the Watson Glaser test online. I haven't heard anything from them. I sent an email in mid Jan asking if they had any updates, as they told us after the online assessment we would be told early Jan. They said they needed longer.

Has anyone heard from them yet? The suspense is killing me.

Training contract frustration -- time to change tack?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice about how to continue with my training contract journey. Sorry if this is a bit of a long rant but I’m feeling a bit dejected and any advice/ nice words would be much appreciated.

For context, I’m in final year law at Oxbridge and I’ve been applying to law firms for the past 3 years (first year schemes, open days, vac schemes etc). I have alright grades (high 2:1/1st) and quite a bit of legal work experience which I was able to obtain informally in my home country. I’ve done two vacation schemes at US firms, one in my second and one in my most recent application cycle, but failed to convert both. I’ve been trying to improve my interview technique/ applications based on advice and feedback I’ve received. However, it seems like I’m getting more unsuccessful with each cycle.

I did 3 first year fast-track schemes in my first year but failed to convert them into TCs. In my second year, I made a few targeted applications, and was invited to the final stage 3/4 times with no success. This year, I’ve made more applications and I’ve been rejected from most of them at the first stage (CV review and SJT). I’ve even been rejected at the first stage from multiple firms where I reached the final interview stage in previous cycles. I’m not sure what’s wrong, as I’m basically just updating my CV and making alterations as compared to previous successful applications. I wonder if the fact that I’ve failed to convert two vac schemes in a row is contributing to this, as it seems like I’ve wasted the chances law firms have given me.

I’m not sure what I should do from here. I don’t want to have to self-fund the SQE, so I’m going to keep applying for TCs, but I’m thinking if I should aim lower and apply for paralegal positions instead. I’m open to other jobs and industries (eg. Entry level compliance officer), but I’m not sure what jobs I can get with no real work experience and no solicitor qualification. I’m been looking at some paralegal positions on LinkedIn, but it seems like most require experience. If anyone could give me some pointers, I’d be really grateful.

TLDR: Multiple application cycles, a few close brushes with a TC but still unsuccessful. What should I do?
