    Hi all,

We are currently discussing a class with an executive partner of an elite US law firm. I was going to ask him to talk about the business of law firms, his experience running a law firm, and the challenges of growing a US law firm in London and competing with the magic circle. I may also ask for his advice to future lawyers about succeeding in the legal profession.

If anyone has feedback on the topics above, or suggestions for what they would like the partner to talk about, please let me know. The class is for you guys so I'm very open to comments!

    Hi Jaysen,

It would be interesting to hear if he has any specific advice for trainees, like how to stand out at a law firm and what makes a good lawyer from his perspective.

    Thanks

    Tanesh

Maybe he could discuss how the deals made in the US office impact the day to day of it's London branch, or if the London branch is sustained wholly by it's own work.

Also, maybe he could comment on what its like to be a partner at a US firm not operating on a lockstep model (if that applies to him).

Lastly, if there are any major differences in culture regarding working hours, pressure etc.

    Sorry this is sooo long!

Not at all, specific questions like this go down very well. Thanks!

    Amazing news!

It would be great to hear his perspective on UK law firms significant challenges to compete in the US market.

Secondly, it would be interesting to learn about internal strategy of US firms towards acquiring talent through high salary lateral hires. This has been such a growing trend in the legal market over the last few years.

Finally, understanding how US law firms differ in their assessment of perspective lawyers/ vacation scheme students.

    Thanks alot Jayson!

    Hi @Jaysen

This sounds like a fantastic idea!

With the growing use of technology and alternative business structures in the legal sector, the industry is transforming to better assist clients and law firms are changing in response. How do law firms decide what changes are worth implementing and what changes are not as sustainable or beneficial to invest in? As the executive of an elite US law firm, I'd be very interested to hear the partner's take on this!
