If i want to understand the private equity market in depth - do i need to look at the reports generated by the top consultation firms to get that knowledge or general reading of the FT and Bloomberg would also yield decent results for beginner level understanding?

Hey!

I think it depends on the depth you are aiming for. For a beginner, I would start with the FT and Bloomberg. This is because they do a great job of helping you understand what is happening in the market day-to-day, the key trends, who is buying what, how financing conditions are changing ,and the broader macroeconomics factors affecting PE. Making sure to build this foundation first is probably more valuable than diving straight into 100-page reports.

Once you have that understanding, the reports from consulting firms and other industry publications become much more useful as you'll have the wider context to understand them.

I would treat the two as complementary rather than one replacing the other - I'd use the FT/Bloomberg to stay current, then dip into a few high-quality reports to deepen your understanding on specific themes :)
