I’m absolutely stumped on how to answer the ashurst summer vac scheme question “please summarise for us what a commercial lawyer does”.
Should I give a general overview? Or touch more upon one of their practice areas and what a lawyer may do within this area?
I think I may give a general overview and then focus upon the clients/law firms actually being a business in and of itself?

Hi @Hele25,

This is a great question. I think, if you are still struggling with this, it might be a good idea to start a new thread, or to add to an existing thread related specifically to Ashurst/application questions. I think you will get a better response that way! Posts on this thread have a tendency to get swallowed up/lost because of the volume of posts.

For what it is worth, I think that your approach sounds like a sensible one.

Do let me know how it goes. Here to answer any questions in the meantime! 🚀
Just wanted to throw out for people looking to boost commercial awareness that I recently subscribed to Matt Levine's free 'Money Stuff' newsletter. It's from Bloomberg but free - extremely informative, incisive and funny (did I mention free?) A bit american-centric and I think at its best if you already have some familiarity with financial markets, but super accessible and very fun.
@Rob93, thank you for the suggestion! I will subscribe to this now!

Resources I find/found particularly useful are:
1. Watson's Daily (I still subscribe and it really is great). I mostly read it over breakfast/a coffee ☕.
2. @BK's posts (found here). They are fantastic.

Hope that helps :)

Apologies to bother you guys - I just had a couple of questions about the Skadden application form:

1. It asks students to give "secondary schools" attended - given that there is no point in the form where it asks students to list their sixth form, I assume that "secondary schools", for this purpose, includes the sixth form where I took my A Levels?
2. On the question asking for "significant gaps in your academic/employment history", does a gap year count as such a gap, and if so, do you think candidates would be expected to write anything other than the fact they had a gap year, and the dates this gap year took place?
3. On the cover letter, given that there's a word limit of just 300 words, do you reckon it'd be okay to leave out the sender's and recipient's address, the paragraph at the start where I state my name and my degree, and the paragraph before the "yours faithfully" bit where I thank the recruiter for taking the time to read my application?

Cheers in advance - I'd be really grateful for some pointers!
