Hi all, I just finished the Latham & Watkins online assessment. I am very confused, as on their website it was said that there would be a short video interview after their SJT, but there was none. I ensured I answered all questions multiple times, and I have completed every section. I emailed recruitment just in case, but I am so worried right now,
The VI is stage 2 which comes with critical thinking questions. The SJT is the first stage and does not have any vi

Hi all, currently working through the HFW vacation scheme application and was wondering how others are approaching the why HFW question in terms of how it differs from its competitors. Obviously, I am aware of their deep sector focus being at the centre of how they operate, but what is the best way to show in how this differs to its competitors like Reed Smith or Stephenson Harwood? For example, if I try emphasise HFW's culture of recruiting from a vast background of industries, Reed Smith typically have done the same thing. Or, is solely recognising how HFW's decision making such as offices in international shipping hubs, hirings or CSR reflects this sector first approach?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Rory.

i applied to reed smith since october and i havent received anything since then, should i just conclude they will reject me? i have been seeing so many test and vi invites already 😔
Hi!

I definitely wouldn't assume this is a rejection! The early careers team are extra busy due to reviewing applications alongside going to law fairs and events, and they are sending out test invites in batches. I would try not to worry too much - there's still quite a while before the deadline! :)

Guys I'm panicking after submitting my app to Mishcon. In the achievements section I included being presented an internal award but this was off the back of an unofficial 'demotion' to my old role as a team lead due to business needs. Feel like I am spiralling over it because I used the word demotion.

I framed it in a way that looks like I took this setback and made something out of it. Did I just make a faux pas using demotion as an example? I get it shows something negative but I tried framing it in a way that spins the negative into a positive and got recognition out of being adaptable. Help?

Hi Rory!

For the "how HFW differs" part, try thinking beyond just its sector focus and ask how that focus actually shapes the firm's identity. For example, how does building the whole business around a few core industries influence the kind of work trainees do, the client relationships, or even the culture compared to more generalist firms?

It's fine that there's overlap with others such as Reed Smith or Stephenson Harwood - instead of trying to find something totally unique, it might be a helpful to focus on how HFW's sector-driven model combines with other features (such as its global network, particular training style, or size) to create a different feel. If you can explain what the combination means to you personally, and how it helps to make HFW stand out against its competitors, you'll naturally stand out.

I hope that assists! :)

Overthinking like this will drive you insane throughout this process! However for your piece of mind, the AI chat interview will allow you to clarify this contextual point as it asks questions based on the achievements / work experiences included in the online application, so I really wouldn't worry :)

HSF Kramer WVS! Thank you to @Abbie Whitlock @Andrei Radu for their posts- super, helpful, do you both have any advice for the scheme specifically?
Huge congratulations!!! 🎊 That is an amazing achievement, and I hope you celebrate!! :)

For the vacation scheme itself, I'd say go in with an open, curious mindset. The firm already knows you're capable - the scheme is really about seeing how you work with others and whether you'd fit into the culture. Try to engage naturally with everyone you meet, show genuine interest in the work, and think commercially about the broader context of what you're doing.

Try not to stress about "standing out" in a flashy way - focus instead on being thoughtful, collaborative, and authentic. What tends to make the best impression is someone who listens well, contributes meaningfully, and shows that they understand HSF Kramer's values and way of working.

I'd also encourage you to make the most of the opportunity to build relationships, both with the trainees / associates / partners at the firm, and your fellow vac schemers! Ask insightful questions, take interest in your supervisors' career paths, and get involved in conversations around the office. Whilst you are being assessed, treat it more like a genuine insight into life at the firm and try to learn as much as you can!

Wishing you the best of luck with the vacation scheme - I'm sure you'll smash it! :)
