Personally, I don't think you should factor in the complexity of tasks or business need. This is because (1) it's impossible to know what specific tasks you will get from the people in your department, and (2) the busyness of a department does not really reflect how likely you are to convert the scheme, your workload, or your experience in that team.
I'd factor in almost everything based on your personal interest. The only other factors I'd think about include any experiences you have had meeting people in that practice area, or any comments you've heard from people at the firm about what that practice area is like. But I appreciate that is likely to be minimal.
The reason personal interest is the most important thing is it'll make a huge difference to how you show up, the kind of questions you ask, and how quickly you pick up the work. If you're not sure what you're interested in yet, I'd start by reading about the practice areas on offer and making a decision based on this. You could also find the trainees/associates on LinkedIn and see if you can get a vibe about what the team is like (but this is a very minimal view on what it's actually going to be like).
Hi all, sorry if this was already discussed but I can't really find it anywhere...does anyone have any insights re Macfarlanes stage 1 online assessment? They make a reference to a calculator so I am wondering whether numerical reasoning will be part of the assessment? Thank you!
Have a DTC interview coming up with Slaughter and May. Have heard they can grill you quite a bit so if anyone has done the partner interview I would really appreciate any advice or tips!
Hi, I have a “feedback call” scheduled for tomorrow morning. Is this normally good or bad? They haven’t said yet and I had a good feeling about it until I received the email saying “I hope your week is going well so far! Can we arrange a feedback call please reply with your availability… looking forward to speaking with you”. I am soooo nervous and need piece of mind whether it is good or bad PLEASE HELP!!!!

As discussed previously, I have recently accepted a training contract with a firm. Following this, I contacted another firm where I had secured a summer vacation scheme to withdraw from the process, as their offer stated that candidates holding TCs would not be eligible to attend. However, the firm has since responded to say that they would be happy to honour my place on the scheme unprompted. See below:
"Thank you for your email and a huge congratulations on securing a Training Contract! Where will you be going? We would of course be happy to still honour your place on the Summer Scheme if you still wanted to join us?"
There is nothing in my training contract offer letter that appears to prohibit me from attending, and I would love to take part as it would be a good way to spend three weeks this summer. Given I have informed them of my situation, I would also not be taking a TC spot from anyone else on the scheme.
I would really appreciate your advice on how best to approach this. Could attending the scheme be viewed negatively by the firm with which I have accepted the training contract?

Hi just wanted to say that the VS firm might think you are still considering them for a TC (just because you have a TC does not mean they won't consider you for one unless you have made it clear you would not accept an offer from them).
Also woudl assume that your TC firm might think you are considering a TC at the other firm if you do the VS so advertising it on social media might not be the best idea but if there is nothing in your contract it should not be an issue.
In any case congrats on the TC and VS !
I see, I definitely wasn't planning to advertise it on social media or anything like that, just thought it would be a good way to spend a portion of the summer. Thank you for your help!
