Living Comfortably as a Trainee/NQ Solicitor

This is the key thing to consider - While firms often pay taxi's to get you home if it's a late one, you don't want to be messing about with a long commute at silly o'clock when you need to be back in the office in the morning. I used to have drive 1hr to work each way, and I can tell you about...

    Herbert Smith Freehills App

I've written this a few times on the forum. GR said that this question is your opportunity to write persuasively. So, ensure whatever you write about is well thought out, well researched, and persuasively written. I used this opportunity to also link my story back to the firm using a very...

Living Comfortably as a Trainee/NQ Solicitor

You can do some research, based off of your own criteria. Here's my quick knock-up: Trainee Salary at PM: £41,000 in London. The typical upper range of mortgage, based on typical bank's lending criteria - £133,300 - £185,000 My very brief Rightmove search found: Studio Flat in Zone 5. NQ...

Giving up - are my grades holding me back?

You have a 64% Average. For reference, this cycle when I applied my Average was 63%. Granted, perhaps there are other areas of my application that can mitigate this, but, the likelihood (as hard as it is to swallow) is that your applications simply need to be improved. As Jessica pointed out...

Best of luck in your future endeavours. I started this journey at 32, having no university education whatsoever! As Camilla pointed out above, you can come back to the industry in the future if your heart is truly set on it. The legal sector will always be here!

I expect what they did was work out from their VS, how many offers they were going to make. Then, they looked at the direct TC apps they had and from those who were given the WG, they made a decision on how many they would invite to AC, based on the available TC's left. This is based on the...

One thing I do know from FF is that for their VS, they ran AC's over a long, LONG period of time. Their AC's are very small... there is a possibility they run more, however, there have been a lot of people who received a rejection post-WG. Are you waiting on your app?

They ran them last week, and have given out some offers :)

No, its ok :) So, they gave 9 to their Winter VS. They also offered 4 TC's to people who were meant to be on the Spring/Summer Scheme without them doing the scheme itself (I wasn't able to get to the bottom of why this happened).

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

It's 24, however, they had already given 13 TC's out prior to our Spring/Summer combined VS. They likely over-offer to account for those who choose to not take the offer, as almost all the candidates had multiple TC offers on the scheme. But yes, returning to the original point - Most of the...

Like most big US firms, they recruit primarily from their VS. Direct TC applicants are simply used to back-fill what hasn't been filled from their VS candidates. For reference - They had about 30 VS candidates for around 12 TC spots.

They are still making some decisions on VS candidates having dished out quite a few TC's.

Mentioning a Law Blog in an application

I've written a few articles for blogs. I used this as a passing point to evidence my interest in Commercial Law (they were subject-area focused articles) and to show how I'd engaged/developed with my own interest.

You will undoubtedly write a better answer about something you are genuinely passionate about. If you are genuinely passionate about something other than what the firm are doing, is it the right firm for you? That aside - If it's a commercial firm, I'd try to write about something commercial...
