TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Try not to compare yourself to others because so much luck comes into it. Whilst I did well in ACs on the whole, I didn't do well at all on vac schemes! I know other future trainees who were the complete opposite from me and did 10+ ACs only to get one vac scheme and then convert it. You are...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Congratulations - this is a great achievement! It goes to show just how random and draining this process is for all of us. It is those with resilience like yourself who start to see some positive results :)

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I would e-mail them to clarify, but considering that some firms will carry people's applications over from winter until summer if they have too many winter applications, I would not be surprised if this means that you are still allowed to apply for the summer vacation schemes within this cycle.

I had them in one box myself!

    Pinsent Masons covering letter

Perhaps @Jessica Booker can advise on this. The application system states 'If you are applying for a position based outside the UK, it is mandatory that you upload your CV and cover letter here. If you are applying for a UK-based position, you may wish to attach your CV if you feel it contains...

    Most salient commercial news stories/topics?

Hi @defiledpenguin - here are all of the recent commercial awareness threads that the forum has seen! I hope this is helpful :)

    Spelling mistake in Application forms

I also learnt a trick on several applications - read it through after you've already submitted it and you are guaranteed to notice the mistakes you didn't notice before! 🤣

Free Month of TCLA Premium (Bronze) Every Week (21-22)!

Hi everyone! I am thrilled to announce @futuretraineesolicitor as the winner for this past week, owing to their sequence of informative posts beginning here and their generally excellent engagement with the forum. It is amazing to have users helping one another with such enthusiasm as we begin...

TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Do you mind me asking which firm this is for? If it simply requests a CV and nothing else then I would not write a personal statement - but if there is any mention of wanting to hear more about you then perhaps that could be appropriate.

Those sound to me like great examples for the question at hand! Now let's reconsider how you would frame them in your answer to make them as impactful as possible :) First of all, what is a music/legal start-up or do you have two start-ups? This needs an explanation as it sounds awesome...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I think the 'why law', 'why commercial law' and 'why this firm' questions are fair game in absolutely any interview. What you won't expect to find here is a commercial interview, a case study interview, an article interview, a presentation, or an interview that really digs in really deep to your...

    Work experience section on applications

I think @Jessica Booker's advice is spot on. Personally, I only elaborated and used the full word count for work experience examples where I had a lot to talk about that I thought was directly relevant to the role I was applying to (e.g. specific pieces of work I did on vac schemes). When I...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I've heard stories of people with A Levels lower than that securing TCs at great firms. With some firms it may well hold you back, but many recruit holistically and mitigating circumstances will be taken into account, along with the fact that candidates will make up for lower grades with strong...

I have given some of my thoughts on this in this thread: https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/watson-glaser-hints-and-tips.4328/ I agree that the inferences part of the WG can be quite ambiguous at times! Practice is really the key to feeling more comfortable with the Watson...

    Watson Glaser hints and tips

I would also mention with regard to the Deduction and Interpretation sections that there is a tricky distinction to be made between the two which many candidates will miss. For the Deductions section, the conclusion must 'follow necessarily' whilst for the Interpretations section the conclusion...

    Watson Glaser hints and tips

Assumptions are more straightforward than inferences in my opinion. For recognising assumptions, you just have to get your mind around the core premises upon which the statement lies. There are usually very few of these - something which may be assumed but is not absolutely necessary to the...

    Watson Glaser hints and tips

Hi @shharia - I think the best advice is to do as much practice as possible! JobTestPrep has paid resources and explanations for Watson Glaser questions whilst individual firms (e.g. Clifford Chance) have free practice WG tests on their website

Magic Circle, Silver Circle or US firms, which is better?

'All three' include almost fifty firms given the number of excellent US firms in London. You shouldn't be surprised if Magic Circle and Silver Circle firms will be getting in excess of 3000 applications each year for 30-100 training contracts. Some US firms are on a similar level but many US...
