You don’t need to explicitly link it to the firm you are applying to. However, you may want to identify elements of other law firm’s events that align with the firm you are applying to. For instance, did you do a real estate case study at an open day, and the firm you are applying to has a great...
Typically only once you have accepted an offer. Some firms will contact academic referees only before interview (face to face interview stage).
However, they have to ask your permission to do this, so you will be aware of when they want to request it.
Anything is open as long as it is not part of your degree or you have been contracted to do it as part of a job. I’d probably avoid the volunteering/tutoring as both fall into employment, and therefore should really be in your work experience section. However it’s a grey area and some people...

It depends on how much time you run out by. A few seconds or half a sentence, then most likely not. But if you haven’t managed to communicate the key points, then that could be more of an issue.
You can do, but there is no need to. Plenty of people don’t. The only exception would be if the firm has asked you to acknowledge the email or there is information you need to respond with.
This is very normal. I wouldn’t worry too much about it, and just continue to check in with the individual to see if/when the work can be delegated to you.
