Agree with the above, but I'd add that if the firm refers to itself in abbreviation you can usually dispense with the long form entirely (e.g. Weil, Freshfields, Skadden). If you're considering an acronym (e.g. A&O, HSF, NRF) check to see if the firm uses it in marketing materials or the app...
I personally would probably *not* name drop other firms - it feels a bit shady calling it out that directly, and ultimately the focus is on Latham, not the other firms. I just namedroppped a few for demonstrative purposes because knowing what other firms do/don't offer is helpful to figure out...
On the second one, there are two things that I think are very important to bear in mind. This Q is framed differently to q lot of other 'why this firm' Qs, both with its focus on training and with the comparative element.
So firstly, you're looking at specific features of training at Latham -...
Two things here.
One is that unless the question is worded nearly exactly the same way, with the same word count, the answer might read awkwardly- make sure you're answering the specific question asked. 'Why do you want to be a commercial lawyer' and 'why are you interested in a career in...
Kirkland and Davis Polk are non rolling and haven't closed yet so I'd expect a couple weeks after close. Skadden is rolling and closed and I think could really be whenever. I wouldn't expect anything before next week, and reckon mid-late Jan for most.
Ultimately I think the most important thing is to remember that this question wants you to show you understand 1) business generally 2) law as a business and 3) Ropes specifically. If you achieve those things you'll be in the running
It's an extremely tough question. My approach - bear in mind i was unsuccessful - was to focus on the firm's market position and client base and possible ways to build that out. I looked at possible geographic expansion, developing a niche practice group and broader ESG integration. Common...
It will vary firm to firm, I wouldn't expect any movement on any outstanding applications until the first week of Jan - today and tomorrow are both stat holidays, as is next Monday. Some grad rec might be working this week but I'd imagine many, likely most, are not.
I applied for Davis Polk whiledoing the GDL - didn't get anywhere with them, but I recall them not minding academic stage provided that you can start training in 2 years' time.
True that they do hire disproportionately from oxbridge, though I'd take that with a grain of salt given their intake...
