    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

Hey everyone, please note that you may have some trouble accessing the main TCLA website (www.thecorporatelawacademy.com) over the next couple of hours. This should not affect the forum or TCLA Premium. My apologies for any inconvenience caused by this. Edit: This is now taking place Tuesday...

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

Name dropping i.e. simply mentioning names in an application form is bad. If you are using mentioning names in an application with a purpose i.e. you are discussing how what you learned from X led you to apply to a firm - that's fine.

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

I'd avoid generally phrases like 'my task was X' or 'I was responsible for Y'. Instead, we can jump straight into discussing what you actually did. For example, rather than stating, 'I was responsible for negotiating contracts, liaising with suppliers, and raising sponsorship'. You can say, 'I...

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

You started this by being annoyed by Jess because she hadn’t responded to someone’s query over a Friday night. That’s just petty and unreasonable. Whatever issues you’ve had in the past, I feel you’re coming into this forum with a big chip on your shoulder. It’s absolutely fine to be upset and...

    Legal Tech v Training Contract

Also open to ideas! We did have a legal tech forum back in the day, but we closed it down due to lack of demand.

    Commercial Awareness Discussion Thread

For anyone with an interest in ESG, Baker McKenzie has released a 10-part(!) webinar series here: https://www.bakermckenzie.com/en/insight/publications/resources/esg-webinar-series.

why do you actually want to work in commercial law? (honest)

Love the honesty in this thread. Initially, I'd say I was drawn in by the prestige and salary. I wanted to be 'successful' and I felt becoming a commercial lawyer would make me successful. Outside of that, I'd say the actual work interested me the most. I really liked the idea of drafting and...

Hogan Lovells application question (personal achievement)

First one sounds great to me. You sound the most passionate about this one. I'd always go for what matters to you the most, rather than trying to pick the 'correct' one for a law firm. I almost always find that answers written to impress don't end up being particularly impressive.

    Mills & Reeve Application Question

I'm a little confused by your question here, so let me know if I haven't understood you properly. With regards to the question, I don't think there's a need to identify the legal services the company will need (e.g. corporate work). I'd simply focus on what matters to the company with respect...

Bird & Bird Biggest Opportunities 2020-2021

Don't worry - that's a very common situation to be in. That's exactly right. Looking at Bird & Bird's sectors, are there any that interest you the most? I'd use that as a starting point. You can then begin researching the most significant opportunities facing the sector. The mistake here is...

Ah that's such good news. Really well done! If I recall correctly, mine took a few weeks.

    Allen & Overy SJT

It's incredibly frustrating to spend so much time on an application only to be rejected by an SJT. I hope you hang in there.

My answers to Bird & Bird application questions - any good ?

Throughout, note the firm is Bird & Bird, rather than Bird and Bird. Also, be careful of missing/incorrect apostrophes, incorrect capitalisation (e.g. 'government'), and typos (e.g. 'the live sports business model will innovative'). 1. I feel we're taking quite vaguely in this answer. At the...

Bird & Bird Biggest Opportunities 2020-2021

Note that the question isn’t about choosing a ‘correct’ sector. You are free to choose any Bird & Bird sector of interest to you. Once chosen, you can then decide what you feel is the biggest opportunity facing that particular sector. That’s where you can justify your chosen opportunity. If...
