    Law Firm Insight: Linklaters

The legal press often use JV and merger interchangeably, which makes this unclear, but from what I gather it's the latter (a JV). To answer your second question, both options were on the table and Linklaters did try push for a JV between 2014 and 2015. I understand they couldn't find a suitable...

    Decline of the high street

    1. Restructuring and insolvency departments are very busy at the moment. When companies struggle, they need legal advice. Perhaps, they want to sell off non-core assets, restructure debt or make employees redundant. As you said, they can also try an agreement with creditors using a CVA or scheme...

    Winter Vacation Scheme 2018 Thread

You may have found this out already but FYI -- I just heard from a trainee that apps for Latham open on or around 11 October.

Herbert Smith Freehills Vacation Scheme 2018

I like this question. They just want to see what you are interested in and why that topic interests you. No need to choose something that sounds impressive or is relevant to law. Instead, you can use it as an opportunity to talk passionately about a topic that you genuinely like. Tips for the...

    Winter Vacation Scheme 2018 Thread

The Bird & Bird question Reed Smith have a particularly difficult question: "Who are Reed Smith's competitors and how does Reed Smith differentiate itself from the firms you name?"

    Law Firms' Mergers

Yes, it affects the international scope of the work you do. If a firm has managed to expand quickly by adopting a Swiss verein structure, you'll be exposed to a large number of jurisdictions/international lawyers. You may have new opportunities for secondments/knowledge sharing -- especially if...

    How to answer why us?

Especially for firms like Kirkland and HSF. It's a better answer if you have a genuine interest in the work than artificially referring to awards/deals (which students often do). Ben explains it well here: https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/the-complete-guide-to-training-contract-applications/

    Winter Vacation Scheme 2018 Thread

Rolling as far as I'm aware. Would strongly recommend applying early to A&O as places fill up.

    Discouraged

As you said, contract law is the module that has the most relevance to commercial lawyers and a large proportion of what commercial lawyers do involves drafting/negotiating contract terms. I don't think it's a great measure, but it's true, many law firms will factor in your contract law module...

Challenge facing the firm at this current moment - Directly criticise the firm or be more generic?

Came across this -- might be useful for these kinds of questions: Depends on the law firm/the time scale we're looking at. It's also quite a subjective choice. Of the ones you mentioned I'd rank cybersecurity, ABS and Brexit. I'm not convinced of US protectionism or new fee arrangements, but...

Challenge facing the firm at this current moment - Directly criticise the firm or be more generic?

The question isn't asking you to criticise the firm, although if you find yourself making a critical comment about the firm, that's fine. You can choose something general (like Brexit or AI), or you can be specific to a firm (e.g. Freshfields trying to break into the US market). It's completely...

    Welcome! Introduce yourself here :)

When you first posted earlier, I spent a good while trying to work out why you had 10 trophy points already. Then I saw it was your birthday. Happy birthday! If it makes you feel any better, I too spent (some of) my last birthday posting on TCLA! For the avoidance of doubt, this is the trophy...

Weil, Gotshal & Manges Vacation Scheme Application Questions

As far as I'm aware -- yes. Sometimes, firms will get a weaker vac scheme round and recruit more from direct TC applicants, but that's not something I'd bet on. I'd suggest applying for a vac scheme if you want to maximise your chances.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges Vacation Scheme Application Questions

The last question is nothing to worry about. Read up on the firm and asked informed questions. In my interview, the partner asked me if I still wanted those questions answered -- or I was told I could ask new questions.

Pros and Cons of a Sector-based Approach

Definitely. Many firms see it as a way they differentiate themselves from rivals. You can add Simmons & Simmons to the list of firms with a sector-based strategy.
