Is it just me who struggles to continue applying since I feel that I am missing valuable time I can spend studying rather than on an application that can get me nowhere if rejected?

I completely understand and the knocks are hard to take. Applications are not a waste of time though as you learn to perfect your writing and actually the whole process makes you even more determined to succeed. Try to see every step you make as a step further. It is a really tough process, almost brutal but you have to keep upbeat and keep going if this is really what you want. Resilience is key. Keep going.
It's definitely not easy to balance the two. My studies really took a back seat when I applied in my third year.
