irish student hoping for londonnnnn

hey guysssssss!

This is so unlike me to post but I wanted to ask for some general advice / feedback / what you think my odds would be to land a london vac scheme / tc!!

I'm an Irish student going into final year of law at a big Irish uni. i am currently on a high first, but had a 2.1 for first and second year///
I have completed two vacation schemes in the big 6 Irish law firms, and got return offers from both. i also spent a summer paralegalling with one of them too. I have been heavily involved in uni societies and leadership positions before also. i have attended plenty of careers events in Ireland and went on a london trip visiting some firms a couple years ago.

i rlly have my heart set on london now but am suffering majorlyyyy from imposter syndrome. I rlly dk how my degree could shape up compared to oxbridge ones, not least bc i dont do the same english modules like english land law... which am not sure if this is a req for the sqe or what. also my plan had been to rlly target the winter and spring vac schemes bc allegedly they are less popular but unforch the irish college term does not align with those dates (((

anyways!! so far i have been doing my best to network with people (mostly alumni from my uni) who have moved over and hearing their insights.

what i have applied to so far:
autumn vac scheme for Simpson Thacher - not heard anything back yet
A&OS winter vac scheme - submitted and got my feedback report - high numerical and verbal reasoning but didnt rank super high on adaptability which is probs not ideal..
Paul, Weiss open day - submitted and waiting response

if anyone had any advice or tips or ideas on how i should strategise this I'd rlly appreciate it. Ik firms would never accept this explanation but i truly would work anywhere!!! I rlly couldnt narrow it down to only a few... i would be the happiest ever so long as I am working in any big firm in London

Fantastic grades too. We've had plenty of people apply from Ireland at TCLA (including some that have worked in the team!).

Hi @thecranberries !! Big welcome to the forum . Honestly, reading through your post, other people should feel like the imposter rather than you! You have fantastic grades (better than mine) and equally amazing work experience (I'd also say better than mine haha). I'm sure you will have great fortune in the application cycle.

I think you are definitely on the right track, do reach out to whoever you can. It doesn't only have to be from your University but potentially others either from Ireland or with some other similarities. Beyond that, try to attend/register for any online events you can find. I know Legal Cheek and Aspiring Solicitors and a few other places host Virtual Law Fairs & other events. This would probably be the easiest way to narrow down the firms for you.

And of course, the team at TCLA is always here to help !

jw if u have any idea how to check if i have been shortlised for firms open days / how that works...? I have clicked on the links provided by TCLA for the applications but does that mean that I get shortlisted from there?
