Hi there,

I am wondering whether I need to include another reason for 'why commercial law at OC' in my current answer (below)? I am pushed for words and I haven't moved on to discuss skills/ hobbies yet.

3. Outlines reasons you wish to pursue a career in commercial law at Osborne Clarke? How have you developed your skills through hobbies and interests? (500

Completing my final A-Level economics exam on the day of the EU referendum vote, I was struck by the legal aspect of ‘Brexit’ and the extent of its impact on companies’ ability to do business in the UK. It was at this point, after recognising the centrality of legal considerations in shaping the operational parameters and growth of businesses, that I first became interested in commercial law. Indeed, what really drew me to commercial law, in particular, was the opportunity to work with clients utilising both legal expertise, as well as commercially on-point sector knowledge, to help their business navigate a complex and evolving legal landscape. It is clear that providing an exceptional service to a client requires adaptable knowledge that stretches beyond the purely legal aspects of business, and it was this intellectually challenging aspect of commercial law which really appealed to me.

Building upon this initial interest, I knew I wanted to work for a firm which was built around the dynamic and dualistic role of a commercial lawyer as both a legal expert and a sector specialist. Osborne Clarke appeals to me for this reason because of its sector-first approach and the firm’s unparalleled reputation for work in the technology and communications sector, having advised clients such as Facebook and Vodafone. Undoubtedly, my ultimate goal is to become a lawyer for businesses in this sector, and I feel incredibly excited at the prospect of combining my legal career with a personal interest for the industry to advise the firm’s impressive sector-leading clients.

Moreover, having attended a number of webinars hosted by Osborne Clarke, including those on the ‘Tech Trends of 2021’ and the ‘Decarbonisation of the Automotive Industry’, it’s clear that the firm’s lawyers have a genuine interest and thirst for further knowledge about their sector. The passion of the firm’s lawyers’ for what they do is evident and it is this openness to future change which crystalised my desire to work at Osborne Clarke, a firm which rejects complacency in favour of a culture of ambition and progressiveness.
