Resit

I am a second-year LLB student currently considering an academic appeal following significant mitigating circumstances during my examination period.

I was medically unwell before and during my exams and have medical documentation confirming both my condition and that I should have been on bed rest at the time. Despite this, I still sat my examinations due to misunderstandings regarding the school policy, and my performance was significantly affected. In particular, I received two marks in the 40s which are extremely below my usual academic performance that only consisted of 2:1s and 1:1s.

If my academic appeal is successful, I would become a dormant resit student for the year and retake the affected examinations next May, giving me the opportunity to achieve marks that accurately reflect my academic potential.

I am particularly aiming for US and Silver Circle, Magic Circle firms, so my main question is: which option would look better to these firms, keeping my existing results, including two marks in the 40s, and explaining the mitigating circumstances, or taking a dormant year and resitting the affected exams to demonstrate my actual academic potential?

Would becoming a dormant resit student because of formally documented mitigating circumstances significantly damage, or potentially ruin, my chances of securing vacation schemes or training contracts at these firms, even if I subsequently achieve strong results in the resits?

I would really appreciate perspectives on which of these two routes would put me in the stronger position when applying to highly competitive commercial firms.

Hi Sanem :)!

I'm so sorry to hear that, I hope all is better now.

While firms would absolutely take into account your mitigating circumstances as they are, and I'm sure you would find successful results, I think the best way to be most competitive would be to take the exams again. If you achieve better results, as I'm sure you will, it will be a clearcut, definite proof of your academic strengths that cannot be argued with.

Wishing you the best of luck!
