Retaking one FLK in Jan 27, ahead of a full SQE2 in May 27?

Hi everyone,

I’m in a slightly unusual position and would be interested to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I passed FLK2 in January 2025, but failed FLK1, and I’m now preparing to resit FLK1 in January 2027. I therefore only need to sit FLK1, rather than both FLKs.

I’ve recently finished my FLK2 refresher work, mainly focused on getting my old FLK2 knowledge into organised notes and flashcards. My thinking was that this would make it much easier to reactivate FLK2 later rather than having to relearn it from scratch.

My main question is how much FLK2 work I should be doing during my FLK1 preparation.

The issue is that after the January 2027 FLK1 exam, I’ll move straight into SQE2 preparation, with classes starting in February and the SQE2 exams in May. At that point, I’ll need to have sufficiently recovered my FLK2 knowledge while also dealing with the full SQE2 workload.

I’m therefore wondering whether I should:

  1. Focus almost entirely on FLK1 from September–January, perhaps only doing very light FLK2 maintenance, and then use February onwards to reactivate FLK2 alongside SQE2; or
  2. Maintain FLK2 more actively during the FLK1 preparation period, even though it isn’t being examined in January, to reduce the amount of FLK2 recovery required during the SQE2 period.

I’m conscious that option 2 could unnecessarily dilute my preparation for the FLK1 resit, but equally I don’t want to reach February having passed FLK1 only to discover that I’ve effectively forgotten FLK2 and now have to rebuild it alongside SQE2.

For anyone who has taken SQE2 relatively soon after an FLK resit, or had already passed one FLK before sitting the other, how would you approach this?

Would particularly appreciate thoughts on how much FLK2 maintenance you think is realistic alongside serious FLK1 preparation, and whether there are particular FLK2 areas you would prioritise because of their relevance to SQE2.
