TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2024-25

Hi guys,

I am unsure if anyone else has been in the same situation but I thought its worth an ask.
How does one go about explaining that you achieved a first in your undergrad despite the percentage being 69.9 when your actual percentage should be 70.6 but the university scaled down your marks for a module?
(ik its not the best but i did everything I could for this grade while struggling with personal stuff and it feels absolutely shitty tbh given everything but it is what it is)
Also, should I send an update to the firms I have an active application with to let them know my final grades and the change because of the scaled down grade?

Any advice would be helpful!

Is a 69.9 not still technically a first? I don't really understand why you would feel bad or even say it's not the best when it's clearly an impressive result and a solid degree? Apologies, but I'm not sure I'm clear what the problem is?

Yes update your results on any live applications (usually that's inputting the specific numbers for each modules).

But most importantly, well done on the degree result. Stop any of the negative chat about your achievements and best of luck with applications moving forwards

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the encouragement. I understand the confusion regarding classification but because of my past performance record and the 0.1% difference, the classification has been rounded up to what it would have been without the scaling.

Would you recommend emailing grad rec with updates for applications I have already submitted?

    Thank you again!

If it's an online apply4law type application then there should be an option to update details like academic results. I don't think you need to email grad rec as I'm sure a lot of people will be in the same boat as you with results being released this time of year

Hi @Amma Usman @Ram Sabaratnam I am due to start a VS next week. I just recieved notice of who my supervisor and trainee buddy is. I want to message them on linkedin but I am unsure of what to say without coming across as trying too hard. Please could you help me?

You don’t need to message them on LinkedIn as you’ll meet them soon enough, and in person, anyway. I understand that you may want to get the ground running early but you will get more time during the scheme to build rapport.

I understand the pressure of not hearing back yet. However, often times, GR will review applications in stages and batches. Emailing them will not make them get back to you any faster. Especially now that VS’ are ongoing and there’s a lot of internal work to do. I understand it’s hard, but I suggest waiting till they get back with a response. In the meantime, there are still a couple of direct TCs open, which you could consider applying for. Or alternatively, you could spend the time re-strategising for the next cycle!

I agree with @FM302989, @confusedbird. You should be very proud of yourself as that result is no easy feat!

I think most of uni have this policy in the handbook- if you achieve half of your modules in the next degree classification (i.e. in your situation: above 70%)- and your overall grade is in the 1.5% margin (some uni is 2%)- then you can submit an application of appeal to the uni: and they will considering your situation. Please check your uni's handbook- this may vary between different universities.

I still can’t believe it but I received a TC offer from an amazing firm, and I’m forever grateful for all the support here. I promised myself I’d include some lessons I’ve learned in my journey and post them here shortly. For those who feel hopeless, securing a TC is definitely possible. It requires a lot of work but it is possible.

Would it be a bad idea to pre-write applications starting around now?

Trying to pump up my rookie numbers

This is definitely a good idea, and I’ve advised many people to do the same. Just be mindful that the application questions for each firm may change each cycle. Though for some firms, I’ve seen them not change for many years. Regardless, if you have structured answers to the work experience section, why commercial law, and why X firm, you won‘t go wrong. These will likely apply to multiple firms, help you save time, and even if they’re not directly applicable at application stage (unlikely), they will be needed at later stages/ACs.
