I recently read a bio of a senior partner at a London US law firm, and I was surprised to see that they completed their training contract at Tesco, the supermarket. You can also find plenty of successful City lawyers who started their career at obscure high street firms. We are all here on TCLA because we like to aim high, and through the hard work, it is comforting to remember that people can build very successful careers without a TC in the City. That's not to say that those alternative paths are easy, of course; it still took plenty of work, time and dedication to make the transition, whoever they might be.

All that just puts things into a little perspective, and it's not to say anyone should aim "lower". I know it's a bit of a cliche, but a great TC is really is only one successful application away. This forum proves that every season. The most useful advice you'll get from any of your peers is to just keep going. Hang in there and submit that next app you're working on.

Hi everyone I wanted some advice and would love your opinion on this. I have a SVS and it one of the days clashes with my graduation. I really want to go to my graduation but I don’t want to do so if it hampers my chances of converting to a TC. Unfortunately this is the only vac scheme available to me as an international student and the graduation falls on a Wednesday (first week of scheme). I spoke with grad rec that did encourage me to go but they did mention it was an exception they are providing me as they usually expect vac schemers to attend all days of the scheme. I genuinely don’t know what to do as I don’t want me not attending that day to hamper my chances. If anyone has been in a similar situation please help me out! And general advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Hi!

First of all, huge congratulations on securing the scheme and on graduating - both are amazing achievements!!

I don't think attending your graduation for one day should materially harm your chances, especially as you have already been transparent with the graduate recruitment team and they have encouraged you to go. If they thought that it would seriously impact your prospects, I imagine they would have been much firmer about attendance.

This is also probably more common than you think (though firms may have different policies on it), particularly for summer schemes. On some of my schemes last summer, there were people who had a day away to attend their graduation (as it usually falls in the middle of summer schemes), so firms are definitely used to dealing with this situation.

The main thing is to just make sure that you handle it professionally - for example, giving plenty of notice, staying engaged, and making an effort to catch up on anything you miss. In the grand scheme of things, your overall performance and attitude across the scheme will matter much more than one day of absence for an important life event!

I also think it is important to consider whether you would regret missing your graduation later on, especially when the firm has already shown understanding and flexibility in relation to the situation.

Wishing you the best for both the vacation scheme and graduation - hopefully you'll be able to celebrate two things this summer! :)

I’ve got a summer vac scheme which I know is a great achievement, but as the cycle is coming to an end I’m just waiting to hear back from 1 more firm, and 3-4 more direct TCs to apply for. I feel like the chances of securing a TC is getting lower and lower.

Is anyone on the same boat feeling anxious too? Not sure how to adjust my mindset

Just got a paralegal role with a late start date in case I don’t convert my vs. I signed the offer letter but also asked for annual leave in August. They haven’t replied for ages. Liek a day and a bit. I’m so stressed I’ve lost the offer lolol but I know I’m overthinking it - has anyone else had experience with this

On my vac scheme in January someone had to take a day out to do an exam and it didn’t stop them converting! Congrats on all accounts and hope you go to your graduation as it’s a special occasion!
