Developing Client Relationships as a Trainee/Associate

Hi all,

I am intrigued to understand how as a trainee/associate you can start to build potential client leads in transactional fields.

If you work as lawyer in M&A/PE/Finance is it a case of developing early relationships with a client's junior bankers who progress to become MD's/fund managers in later life (who require legal counsel). Or is it a case of going to professional networking events and seeking out new connections, creating articles + content to market yourself, or establishing a strong reputation/niche in a particular sector. Perhaps it may be all of the above to varying degrees, other activities entirely, or something that comes without much effort?

Appreciate this may be beyond the remit of this forum given its focus is on applying to law firms, and I understand it's certainly not a priority for trainees/junior associates, but any thoughts/resources would be very welcome! I get the impression that starting out early could be a great way to climb the ranks, and if theres anything I could be doing in the near future I would be really interested to know!

Thanks

Advice on BPP Distance Learning PGDL?

Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone has taken/is planning to take a Distance Learning PGDL with BPP and can recommend any resources or explain the assessment methods?

I have just accepted a place with BPP's PGDL starting in September. This is a bit of a last minute decision (I was originally planning to study with U of Law) but secured a TC/sponsorship which required me to switch to BPP. I've been having a bit of trouble finding resources that explain the course structure and the best ways to prepare for exams. I would love to know if anyone else has had experience with BPP?

Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

LPC online in January questions!

Hi,

After some unsuccessful vacation schemes this summer after finishing my undergraduate, I'm looking to start the LPC LLM in January at the University of Law (I haven't heard great things about BPP) and have a few questions for anybody who has started in January.

- What was the timetable like beginning in January and when did teaching finish / results get posted?
- Did you find it to be advantageous at all?
- Were there any drawbacks to beginning in January rather than September?

I was also wondering if anyone has completed the LPC online with ULaw and if they had a good experience? Did you get much access to the employability team?

Thank you! :)

Working as an Adviser at Citizens Advice - how to pitch this in applications?

Hi everyone! My name is Natasha and I have just graduated with a distinction in the LPC from The University of Law. However, like many of my peers, I struggled to gain work as a Paralegal due to a lack of experience. Therefore, I pursued volunteering work with Citizens Advice but was fortunate to instead be offered a paid position. My biggest concern is that I hope to go into commercial/corporate law and worry that firms may view my soon to be 6 month duration with Citizens Advice negatively.

For context, my current experience is working with a high street firm in 2016 for roughly 5 weeks and worked in The University of Law's Legal Advice Clinic whilst studying the LPC. On the LPC I tried to choose electives that would suit my preferred path (Banking and Debt Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions, Public Companies and Law and Business).

I can appreciate that both the Clinic and working with Citizens Advice will give me experience in dealing with clients and file management, but will this set me back in terms of proving my dedication to the type of law I want to pursue?

Thank you for any advice in advance!
