Career Change TC - With LPC from 10+ years ago

Hi,

I did my LPC over 10 years ago (2011 to be exact) and for various reasons was unable to pursue a legal career. I am now seriously considering a move back to law, specifically with an interest in employment law due to my current career (HR/Talent/Advisory within tech). I can’t find much specific advice about this kind of scenario so could anyone advise whether I would need to do the SQE or if I could still just apply for training contracts as a mature career changer, given I already have my LPC?

Suitability of profile: Applying for Direct TCs as an International Student

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to the forum and have found it to be incredibly helpful. I just wanted to gather opinions on whether my profile would be well-received by most of the major law firms.

For context:
- I am currently an international student completing my LLM this September at a highly-ranked RG uni
- Did my undergraduate studies abroad (graduated with a 1:1 equivalent)
- Have work experiences in abroad,

Hence, I was wondering if I am at a general disadvantage for not having applied to VS', but with 3 major legal experiences at international firms, would that be taken into account and enough to overcome the lack of a VS? Just conscious of the "transferability" and credibility of legal experiences abroad.

Am not too sure as an international student, and would appreciate any honest thoughts on my candidacy!

@Jessica Booker It would be great to have your input if you'd be happy to :)

Thank you!

Which uni to choose for my LLM?

Hi all, long time lurker here.

I am a law grad and international student. I have applied to some LLM programmes in the UK.

I have so far received offers for Queen Mary and Manchester. I am still waiting for some other universities I applied for.

However, the deadline to accept my offer (and pay the tuition deposit) at Manchester is next week and I am not sure if I should accept it.

My undergrad uni (RG) has a pretty good reputation for law. I am worried that by going to Manchester for my LLM the recruiter would see it as a step down. I know that a postgraduate degree isn't that important in TC applications but how much weight does it carry?

Queen Mary actually gave me a much later deadline to accept offer but it's not as highly recognised internationally (rankings, reputation etc.) From my understanding, if I wish to pursue a career in law in the UK, Queen Mary is the obvious choice. But if I fail to secure a TC, Manchester would be better recognised in my home jurisdiction. I am wondering whether these two unis actually differ a lot from a graduate recruiter's stand point.

I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks!

Need Guidance: Navigating Job Hunt at BC Law Firms as a Recent Graduate

Hello everyone,

I recently graduated from university and am keen on starting my career in British Columbia, Canada. My goal is to secure a position within a reputable law firm where I can apply my skills, grow professionally, and contribute to the firm's success.

During my search, I've come across several law firms in BC that seem promising. However, making a decision on where to apply can be daunting, especially without inside knowledge of the firm's culture, work environment, and growth opportunities.

I'm reaching out to this community in hopes of gaining insights from those who have experience with law firms in British Columbia. Any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations would be incredibly valuable to me. Which firms do you think are the best for a new graduate? What should I look for in a potential employer, and what can I expect during the hiring process?

I'm eager to learn from your experiences and advice to make an informed decision about my future.
Here are the websites that I found:
Hammerco Lawyers LLP
Roper Greyell LLP
Slater Vecchio LLP
Zukerman Law Group
Thank you in advance for your help!

Low 2.1 (1st year) from Oxbridge

I just received my first year results and scored a low 2.1 (63). I'm a student at Oxbridge and was aiming to apply to firms like Latham and Davis Polk... do you reckon I'm better off not applying for their vac schemes? I still have my third term of first year left to cover (which includes Tort and Contract law and I could definitely work my way up to get a high predicted and possibly use this as an indicator for academic improvement). I have attended a few Open Days/first year schemes, and will be doing a summer internship in M&A over the summer before my second year.

Current Stats and Journey

EDITED:
Hi!

I am a final year non-law student from a RG uni, with a predicted 2:1.

Wanted to start off by saying this is my second cycle, with NO luck last year. I definitely went down the quantity over quality route last time. I applied for around 30 VS/TC last year and as I said, no luck.

This year :

RPC - training contract offer

TLT - vac scheme offer
Goughs - vac scheme offer
Womble Bond Dickinson - vac scheme offer

DAC Beachcroft - got an AC but withdrew

Irwin Mitchell - rejected after AC

Blake Morgan - rejected after interview

Osborne Clarke - rejected after online assessment
Burges Salmon - rejected after online assessment
Michelmores - rejected after online assessment

From what I have learnt so far, specifically with ACs - be yourself! They want personality, so be chatty and bubbly. And be passionate, they can see it when its real!

Revision and Practice Resources for SQE2

I'm sitting SQE2 in October. I have found a few good (paid) resources for revision notes, but I'm struggling to find many practice papers outside of a course. I'm self-funding so would rather save the money if I can. Does anyone have any practice resources they'd recommend please?

Revise4Law (paid) - Recommended by a colleague. They go into plenty of detail which is helpful, but they're not SQE2 specific and practice questions are for SQE1.

SQE2 Student Notes (paid) - Found on Reddit. These were written by an SQE2 student so the notes are more tailored to the assessment which is helpful, and also not a scary length!

For practice papers, the SRA have changed their sample papers to include one Sample Answer instead of two which had a stronger and more marginal pass. My friend who sat SQE2 last year had downloaded the old PDFs and so I've attached them to this post. Sample Bs are super nice for confidence and self-esteem! 😄

Withers Spring VC

Hi! I have a place on the Withers vac scheme at the end of April. V excited for it, also v keen to convert the VS into a TC. Can anyone who's been through the process or with knowledge of the process give any advice on how it's assessed, what they look for in VS interns, etc.? Especially keen to hear what gives you the best chance of converting the VS into a TC. Thanks :)

LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) at ULaw

Could someone currently studying the LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2 and SQE Plus) please let me know what the weekly course demands are? i.e. how many lectures per week, how many days are these lectures spread across, weekly hours etc. I'd also be interested to know course end dates, I am due to start in September but I cannot find any exact course dates on the ULaw website.

Any other insights appreciated also!

Thanks
