Simmons & Simmons' Spring Insight Scheme Query

Hi all,

I've just been accepted onto Simmons & Simmons' Spring Insight Scheme. However, little information is available online regarding what it specifically entails. I'm aware of what it will likely consist of, but am wondering whether (like some other schemes, e.g. CMS') if you can be fast-tracked to an AC from it?

Anyone that has completed the scheme in the past, or is yet to do so but knows whether an AC offer can be achieved from the scheme, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks!

Unable to do Vac Schemes, any alternative suggestions?

Hello, I have a study exchange during university second semester and summer, at a university in Australia (I had to do 2 of 3 terms for an exchange at UNSW to make up the required credits), so that means I will not be in the UK during my penultimate year summer and therefore will not be able to do any spring or summer vacation schemes.

There are very few winter vacation schemes, and among those, ones for penultimate year students are even fewer and pretty much all of them take place during my December exams so I lost that option.

I have thought about whether it is possible to do the work placement courses at UNSW but I am unsure whether this is allowed, and when I go there I will for sure try getting a part time job or an internship (but I am not optimistic due to being on a student visa during my time there).

Does this mean I genuinely will not be able to do any legal work experience during my penultimate year? I really wanted to do my study abroad for 6 months as I will get to experience a country I have always wanted to go too, even considering living there in the future if I ever had the chance so I would love to check it out, and it will be my only chance at a taste of independence since I won't really be able to leave my parents house until after graduating only if I get a job in England (since I am in Scotland, University of Glasgow).

I already have decent grades (mid 2:1) (second year of 4 year degree), A's in 8 nat 5s, 6 highers and 3 advanced highers, I volunteer at CAB, am part of the uni badminton team, and previously balanced a part time job as well, I've been trying to get into online tutoring, had a part time job last year as a student caller. I also do a joint degree with business management. I am going to do pwc's diversity insight scheme soon but I haven't been able to get a law first year scheme yet (applied to very few and got a rejection already, and the other applications are also really low quality so not optimistic there).

If there really is nothing I can do, then I will probably try applying to winter vacation schemes in my final year as well as spring and summer vacation schemes and direct tc's based on where firms hire more from. I will hopefully be eligible to do UNSW work placement courses even as an exchange student and I will hopefully also get a part time job while there. Anyways I am sorry for all the information, if anyone has useful suggestions for me I'd be very grateful.

Thank you for your time.

Linklaters Summer Vac Scheme Application Update?

Hi all,

I still haven't heard back from Linklaters for their Summer Vacation Scheme. I know many have received ACs (and have completed them too), but Linklaters is the only firm that hasn't got back to me with an AC offer (or rejection).

Anyone else in the same boat? Or has anyone been rejected yet?

I'm sure I've been rejected, but a little hope would be nice haha.

Thanks.

Realistic chances of converting a US firm VS + tips?

Hello @Abbie Whitlock ! This has sort of a weird question but I'll divide my whole post into three parts:

i) What does a group research task and a partner presentation entail and how do you go about it? What are some common themes that come up?
ii) Since there are around 3 months before my VS, what should I do to prepare? I know commercial awareness is perhaps one of the bigger ones but is there something else I can work on?
iii) I am going to be taking part in a VS where roughly 30% of the applicants get a TC. However I realise that realistically the chances are much higher because there are people who take up TCs at other firms or do something totally weird where the firm is put off by them or theyre just extremely not good enough. Am I right in thinking this is the case? (I understand its not healthy to be fixated on numbers but I am neurodivergent and this is one of the ways I cope haha)

I'd love any and all perspective on this, thank you!

2 vacation scheme offers

Hi all, I am looking for some advice on vacation schemes. I’ve received two VS offers:
  • Firm A: only runs a spring vacation scheme
  • Firm B: offered me a summer vacation scheme (even though I said my preference was spring)
I like both firms, but I’m currently leaning slightly towards Firm B.

My question is: If I do Firm A’s spring scheme and (hopefully) get a TC offer from them, would it be acceptable to still do Firm B’s summer scheme? Or is that generally contractually restricted? Could I perhaps ask for more time before accepting Firm A's offer?

I’m aware it might sound silly not to just accept a TC offer if I get one, but I’d really like to keep my options open if possible — while also not risking ending up with no offer at all. Has anyone been in a similar position, or knows what the usual practice is with US law firms in London?

Thanks so much!

SWOT/PESTLE for Interview

When you do a commercial case study I've read a lot of stuff about SWOT/PESTLE. Are they expecting you to be able to suggest stories from the news eg knowledge of something political going on, a particular industry trend, etc. which might affect the business in question, or do they want you to just mention that there may be external political factors which could be relevant (and basically give no detail), or alternatively would they give specific details of these in the case study and then just want you to comment on the impacts? This is for a first year scheme if that makes a difference...

Discouraged with reapplying: Seeking advice and new perspectives

First time creating an account and posting, I've frequently lurked the popular threads here. As per the title, I'm very discouraged (putting it mildly!) and looking for some support or advice, or just a second opinion from another perspective (especially reapplicants and those more experienced).

I'm struggling a ton with the belief that I really should already have a TC (not speaking in an entitled way or thinking I deserve one, more so there's something innately wrong with me for not getting one by now): I have a fairly strong academic profile (good RG uni), completed one vac scheme each at a city firm (not MC/SC but pretty reputable) last cycle and the one before. I didn't convert either to a TC and the more recent one really damaged my mental health as I tried so hard and the feedback made it clear there was nothing I could have done differently without hindsight knowledge. It doesn't help that all of my peers (from school, uni, people I met at vac schemes/open days) had very smooth-sailing TC journeys e.g. getting a TC during their 1st/2nd cycle with 10ish applications or after just one VS. Upon hearing that I didn't convert my VS, the response was always that I did something wrong or had a horrible failing, which really puts me off reaching out to friends who are also in law so I feel more alone than ever. I try to stay optimistic and not compare myself but pretty much everyone I met at the two VS secured a TC either that cycle or soon after. If people with less privileged academic backgrounds or people working full-time whilst applying can secure TCs, I really have no excuse.

This is my 4th application cycle and my first year not doing a full-time course whilst applying so I really thought I had a good chance now, I applied to many more firms than previous years (50+ in total, almost every firm I could find and which sponsored international students) but still had less success despite trying to incorporate feedback from past applications. It doesn't help that I'm an international student so I can only apply to visa sponsors and this intl status disadvantages me (though I'm not sure exactly how much it factors into decisions/the scoring system).

This cycle I was already rejected from all the firms I applied to in Dec and earlier. I completed 2 ACs and 1 final-stage interview (like AC except it's just an interview for the final stage pre-VS), rejected the day after the first AC (but I expected that, it was a MC-tier firm and most people there were Oxbridge and clearly very bright). That same week (end-Jan/start-Feb) and the day before my 2nd and most recent AC I got the rejection following the interview, which I thought went ok and had hope for. I'm still waiting to hear back for the second AC but I definitely feel like I did badly at the interview, worse than the first AC, so there's no way I will get the VS and I just want to get the rejection over with. It has been 2+ weeks and they said they would get back to us by late Feb and that some may hear earlier, so I have basically lost hope.

I applied to a few more firms after Dec and haven't heard from most yet (already 2 rejections post-app and 1 rejection today post-TI), and these are mostly US firms which rarely take me past app stage. I also saw in discussion threads that some sent out interview invites 1-2 weeks ago, as I had guessed.

I'm not sure if this is a sign to give up and that I'm just not good enough to get a TC – of course I know it's competitive and perfectly normal to go through a few cycles before getting one, but for context I just completed my LLM (non-law undergrad, PGDL and LLM immediately after) so I'm not exactly ahead of the curve. I did one AC last cycle and got the VS from that but seem to be having much less success at interviews this year and I don't know why because I've only tried to make improvements to my style, prep strategy etc. I got past app stage for an okay number of firms this cycle but always got cut after the next few stages (job simulations and VIs are my downfall, and my profile doesn't stand out enough for firms which give out interviews straight after app stage).

I know that application processes are getting more difficult and competitive, is there any point in trying again for a 5th cycle or is this a sign to give up? What is the point in reapplying to the same firms if I couldn't get in this time round? Maybe 2 failed VS means I am not suited to this career? I cannot think of any ways in which I could reliably improve my method/strategy/interview style etc that will put me in a better position and very much feel like I'm past my prime in terms of energy, optimism, how much I'm ahead of the curve etc. I still have a (very) few DTC applications to do but I feel so discouraged and these are firms that turned me down last cycle so I'm not hopeful.

Apologies for the ramble; I don't know if this will be seen or if this post will come off the wrong way (perhaps I'm not very self-aware), but would like a second perspective or just some hope and to get my thoughts down on the page as I'm really unable to talk about this with anyone I know in real life (as per the above) and I have internalised my thoughts about this so deeply that my view may be warped.

Application question on a deal

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if any of you have some advice on how I should approach this application question:

Discuss a deal that [firm] has advised on. What do you think were the strategic considerations and complexities involved, and how did the firm navigate them?

I’m a bit unsure what they’re really looking for in terms of “strategic considerations”. Should I be framing it primarily from the client’s objectives and commercial goals (e.g. what the client was trying to achieve and how the firm helped them get there), and/or should I also discuss the different teams within the firm that would have collaborated on the matter?

I’m also finding that for most deals there seems to be quite limited public information available. Has anyone found a good way of getting more detail beyond the firm’s press release?

Would really appreciate any tips on this kind of question.
