Hi everyone, I’ve just been invited to Mayer Brown’s AC. The link to the booking website says I have until the 4th July to select my AC slot. I want to wait until Friday to hear back from Fried Frank, but I’m worried if I don’t pick the Mayer Brown slot soon enough that the firm would give it away? I’m a bit concerned but maybe I’m worrying over nothing. The email doesn’t mention a date by which I need to pick so I would just be going off the information on the booking website.

Anyone got any insight into whether I should pick sooner or wait to hear back from FF?

It’s worth choosing the Mayer Brown slot soon, so as to select the time which is most convenient for you. Delaying may mean this is not possible. You can then weigh your options when you hear back from FF, and know how to best proceed in terms of communication.

Hey everyone! Does anyone know the exact TC deadline for WFW today? The website says it is 24th of June, but I could not find the exact time. Thanks in advance!
Usually when I see this, I try to submit the day before just to be safe. For some firms it’s midday (12pm), others it’s 11:59pm, others 12am, etc. For some it may even be a very random time during the day. So, when it’s not reasonable to hear back from grad rec, i.e, when it‘s too soon to the deadline, it’s worth submitting a day before just to be safe.

i've worked on the same landmark aviation case as morgan lewis, do you reckon this okay to mention in my application as the ruling has been handed? @Amma Usman

I am unsure about the extend of disclosure/ confidentiality on this, though looking at it objectively, I can see why a candidate may want to mention this in order to stand out.

I put it in anyway lol, just said I worked on the same case, and stated vaguely the type of work I did (which would be the same on their side really), but used it to make the point that I could hit the ground running as I am familiar with working on similar landmark deals as the firm and the skills i've gained off that

Hi. Can someone clarify the differences between a strengths-based interview and a competency-based interview? From what I've come across, a strength-based question is just a competency in disguise, as both require evidence of previous experience. If that's the case, how should I go about preparing for and actually structuring my answers? Is there a list of common strength-based interview questions I can use to prep?

Hi! Are you referring to the civil service interview or interviews in general? Because if you refer to the civil service, then strenght interviews would be questions that focus on your interpersonal abilities that you use all the time which make you the best person for the job, however in general, strenght questions would be something that show whether you are a fit for that place or not and they usually throw you off a bit, i.e. 'do you prefer planning in advance or do you thrive when preparing last minute?' or 'do you prefer collaborating or working alone?' or even 'How do you stay motivated?'; while competency based questions focus on your technical abilities and experience and you can usually prepare for them, such as: 'why are you applying for this role?' 'why this firm?' etc.

That's amazing!! I was just rejected today..... (although I have passed the VI for other similar roles).
From what I remember, you do not have a set time to prepare (but this may be different now, so it could be around 1 minute), but you only have one attempt to start the video. You have a timer running, and around 2 min per question once the video starts. I believe there are around 4 to 5 questions. Questions are usually typical behavioural questions like: 'why do you want to work for the GLD?’ 'tell me a time when you had a problem and how you solved it', or 'what are your goals in joining the GLD'?

    Some tips:
    • Always use the STAR format
    • Practice by yourself before doing the questions
    • Look the camera in the eye
    • It helps to divide your screen and have notes on one side and the VI on the other side
    • You can also use Post-its to remind you of your strengths/abilities
    • Always use the first person when answering and try to find compelling examples (not necessarily within a professional environment)
