This is 100% my personal theory but I assume they'd be quite strict especially because 1) US Firm 2) No cover letter/questions, just CV, so to stand out at that stage you'd probably need good grades and/or good experience ..... but again just my thought!! Hopefully I'm wrong though haha

Hi! This is not really me responding as 'Community Assistant' but purely out of sheer curiosity. Is this a common trend/knowledge that US firms are strict on grades? In my personal experience, most US firms seem to, yes appreciate top Universities, but more so appreciate tangible experience. Whereas I've always found MC firms to have the strictest module grades (Links barring any 2:2's, S&M notoriously targeting top grades, same with FF (I'm not sure where A&O and CC stand). Of course there are exceptions, S&C nearly exclusively has trainees achieving firsts, and I believe there's a few more firms like that too. Nevertheless, I wouldn't personally say it's a hard and fast rule. I think it's more set on the firm, for instance those with multispecialism/generalist approaches generally prefer better academic grades (S&C, S&M and here for instance Cleary).

Please do correct me if I'm wrong as it would be good for me to know for this role, I just have never personally experienced that at a US firm (bar S&C).

Could anyone give me any insight into how important/useful networking is during this process? Should I expect any success in getting a vac scheme if I haven't had a coffee with someone at the firm? Or do plenty get vac schemes going through this process normally without meeting people outside of firm events and open days.

Hi! There is a lot of talk about networking and 'coffee chats' etc. and this can easily cause worries like this.

You are absolutely fine! I personally haven't and also do not know anyone else who has met up with people outside of firm events/open days. Plenty of people get Vacation Schemes and TC offers without doing so (myself included).

Furthermore, plenty of people get offers without meeting any people from the firm, period, including at a Open Day / Firm Event.

However, it doesn't hurt to meet people to understand the culture of the firm, but this can be easily done at such events. You could also reach out to future trainees at your target firms from your University or on LinkedIn.
