Hi everyone! I’m currently working on my application for White & Case (Hong Kong), and I’d love to hear your thoughts on one of the trickier questions:

“Tell us something about yourself that is not included in your CV or covering letter.”
I’m considering talking about my academic interest in psychology. Do you think that’s a good angle? Or would firms prefer something more business or legal related?

Would love to hear:
  • What kind of topics you chose for this question
  • Any advice on what law firms are really looking for here
  • Whether academic interests (like psychology, economics, etc.) are fair game
  • Examples of unique or memorable answers
Appreciate any insights or experiences you’re willing to share!

I do like your angle, especially if you can talk aobut why it interests you and reference any experiences you have to back this up.

Really, this question is about better getting to know you, beyond the information you've already provided (or information that doesn't well match). I usually would avoid mentioning legal/business information for the sake of it, as that'll usually fit better for the cover letter and would feel a little forced for this section.

Hi Katekrab! I definitely agree with Jaysen. GR are most definitely interested in getting to know you as a person and your interests outside of law! Academic interests are absolutely a fair response if this is the first thing that comes to mind when you look at the question. As Jaysen has said, I would avoid writing about anything that you think the firm 'wants to hear', which is often a trap people fall into. It is normally fairly obvious to the person reading your application when this is the case. They are much more interested in seeing both your personality and the quality of your writing. The best answers to these questions are simply well-written ones that explain your interest in the topic - the topic itself is much less relevant. In this case, your angle sounds great. Best of luck!
