Not too old at all! According to figures published by the Law Society the average age is 29-30 for admission to the roll of solicitors. Given that some firms only recruit from VS it’s only logical that you’d then recruit people in their mid to late twenties! Not a thing to worry about :)
If it was me I’d bold my name and make it awkwardly large so it stands out. If they keep it up then just address it in the email (“Hi, for future reference please note that my name is x and I would prefer to be addressed as such, many thanks”).
First of all, I’m really really sorry to hear this. I know how much it hurts when a long-term relationship ends and how it can impact your ability to show up in every other area of your life.
There’s an excellent Ted talk on the psychology of breakups by Guy Winch. A poignant line he says is...
I don’t think anyone can conclusively tell you yes or no but the one thing that is certain is that it’s not a rejection until you receive a rejection 🤷🏻♀️I did mine on February 11th and received my AC invite on the 18th, but that doesn’t mean they’re not looking at later ones now. I know it...
There’s nothing wrong with saying “market leading” or “top tier” but I really wouldn’t mention bands. A lot of associates / partners don’t feel like the bands actually mean very much beyond the fact that the firm contributed information to Legal 500.
Very interesting insight Jessica! I do wonder if people are qualifying from the start (ie doing two years of one practice group) whether that means on the flip side they might be better NQs. Very interesting development either way :)
Sorry, that wasn’t clear. I was just responding to, “Let's say I know that long-term, I wanna be a litigation/disputes lawyer, would being a paralegal at a large intl. firm but doing corporate work instead hurt my chances of being a disputes lawyer due to the lack of specialist experience?”
But...
No this really wouldn’t hurt you, as Jessica said above. I’m a disputes paralegal but sitting in a team that does mainly financial litigation and white collar crime, which I’m sure will help me in a capital markets seat down the line if I secure a TC. Vice versa, if you got experience as a...
If you’ve got any language skills I’d highly recommend leveraging those. There are often short-term paralegal gigs available to help with foreign language discovery. From there it is easier to move to more permanent legal roles.
There’s also a number of very good recruiters I’d recommend...
A bracelet is fine (provided it’s not a huge metal-studded one or something 😝). Most firms are business casual - chinos, a button-up shirt and a nice sweater are fine most days. For any client facing work a full suit will still be necessary.
I wouldn't wear a bright pink suit on your first day but I have yet to meet anyone who has an outright issue with colorful clothing. As long as it looks professional it doesn't matter if your shirt is white or green or orange. When I wear colorful clothing I always try to combine it with...
Also sorry but I’ve just been thinking about this for a few days and I disagree about the bare arms tip. I appreciate that you shouldn’t have your shoulders out and tank tops are a no-go, but if it is 35 degrees out (which is not unheard of in London mid-July), absolutely no one will judge you...
There’s no right or wrong answer with make up. Abstain from anything too crazy (I only wear pink eyeshadow when working from home) but beyond that it’s dealer’s choice really! One of the associates in my team never wears make up ever and I find her incredibly impressive, I couldn’t care less if...
Probably not the best place to start in terms of complexity but there’s a great Instagram account called ‘exceldictionary’. She also has a free guide to the basic functions.
I actually doubt it - a lot of firms have put out statements regarding their position, which means there will have been an internal email in the firm beforehand stating that if anyone is approached by the press for any sort of comments on the matter to please direct them to a press...
Probably not a subject I'd broach to be honest because it's very murky territory. For firms that have staff in Russian offices, they are now in an incredibly uncertain position as to their jobs which will be putting pressure on the firm. As for clients, you have to remember these are also...
I don't see why you would re-do the video interview if they are essentially saying they'll let you skip that step altogether and move forwards onto the AC for the direct TC. Would you prefer to do the vac scheme over the direct TC (which makes sense - I just can't tell from your original...
