TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Yes @S87 this is a good point - I would certainly search inside myself to see if there are better answers! But I was assuming that if your apps got you to the VI then they may have been good enough so it is more the VIs that need working on (although you may yet succeed, fingers crossed)!

I see no reason why the core motivation of your application should change at all. I would not copy your answer word for word and I would certainly add any updated details that continue to inform your motivations, but on the whole these answers should not need to change too much. The answers that...

The law firm recruitment process in the US probably wouldn't go down super well here either: First-stage interviews take place on campus at the different law schools and each firm will have a designated campus interviewer for each law school who will often be an alum of that law school...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Again I do sense that it's not a culture here so I certainly would not feel any pressure to do so! But as you said in your previous post, being polite can never hurt :)

This may just be a rumour, but I have heard that the managing partners of each magic circle firm liaise closely with taco bell to see which candidates have sent them thank-you e-mails...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I think they don't really here at all and I certainly didn't send e-mails with the goal of it helping me out! The US is keen on a lot of strange formalities and since careers advisers always said to write thank you e-mails (they are actually a lot more old-school than the UK in many ways) I got...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Yes I think with all the firms you are applying to, the statistics are pretty irrelevant. They already have so few TCs per applicant that the actual number of TCs per applicant does not really make a difference to how hard you will find it getting a TC, even if one firm has three times more...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I always did - maybe this is a US thing but all my friends who did consulting recruitment in the US were told that interviewers looked to see if they received a thank you e-mail and that it could make the difference between two very equal candidates. That said, I do get the sense that it is not...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

It's really a matter of personal preference! I often used to plan to be done with my preparation the night before and do something unrelated on the morning, but if I had nothing to do on the morning then without exception I found myself thinking of topics I could read up on in advance of the...

@George Maxwell's post was so good that it needed to be linked twice 😀

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

My sense is that some UK firms focused in quite specific areas (IP, shipping, music etc) may take individuals with more maturity and experience (again my purely anecdotal experience from PGDL friends...)

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

It's a personal decision! If you feel well prepared and don't want to be twiddling your thumbs and getting yourself stressed out waiting for the AC then I would work in the morning to keep your mind off it. If you have any worry that working in the morning will prevent you from getting in the...

Yeah if they don't stipulate required marks in individual modules then you should be absolutely fine!

TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Excellent point @Jessica Booker - of course it would be a waste of time to apply somewhere that one cannot see themselves training! This discussion all goes back to a post saying that 'I would take any job I get' and whether that is a good approach; I think that for applicants who want to...

TCLA General Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

@Jessica Booker and @Rob93 have explained perfectly that there is no longer a standard or any strict time requirement at all, in the interest of making things more accessible. For the time being, however, it seems that many firms are continuing to offer qualification routes that substantially...

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Excellent point @S87! Both are great approaches which have been tried and tested; I just think there is a slightly different cultural attitude in the US which is manifesting itself in the way US firms recruit here. I recommend candidates apply to a mixture of both UK and US firms and working out...

I would say that many of the 'Mostly from Vacation Scheme' firms listed here fall within this category!

TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

I am really glad to hear that you have had a similar experience! I think that @Rob93's experience is extremely valid - with some of the firms where I felt like I really deserved to get past the app stage because of the amount of time I had invested in the application, I did end up progressing...

TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

This is an excellent point! Also, it sounds like you know a large amount about the legal market already :) For those who don't (like myself at the time 🤣) I found that the best way of learning was to apply to a broader number of firms and consistently analyse what was working and what was not :)...
