    Common mistakes on application forms.....

A few words I would recommend not including in an application form because they are vague and overused: sparked holistically client solutions multifaceted intellectually challenging

    Transactions Examples in Cover Letters/Essays

No need to mention a deal unless it's genuinely related to why you are applying. Personally, I find too many candidates mention a deal when they shouldn't. If you do mention a deal, you want to make it clear why you are mentioning that particular deal and how it's relevant to the point you are...

Mental Health/Resilience Training For Aspiring Lawyers?

Hey guys, With our premium section, we're looking to go beyond teaching 'technical' skills and provide a range of courses on softer skills (tailored towards working in the highly pressurised corporate environment). We're currently in discussions with a company to deliver courses on mental...

    Deciding between training contracts

Tagging @D and @Alice G as they may have some useful thoughts here. @Romiras may also be able to help. Although about a different comparison, this post from TCLA's Trainee Network may be helpful:

Sorry to dump a load of links, but here are some of my favourite threads: https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/general-commercial-stories-themes-for-ac-discussion.2510/ https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/training-contract-success-stories.1404/...

    Best Free Business/Commercial Law App

I think it's great. You can use it as a general overview of the big news going on at the moment and then dive into particular areas that interest you as you see fit. We've worked with Peter Watson on and off for a while now (he produces some content for TCLA) and he's extremely passionate about...

    Ashurst 2020/2021

It sounds obvious but this is a really great point. So many candidates answer the question they think is being asked, rather than answering the question as stated.

    Best Free Business/Commercial Law App

I really like the BBC News app. Under the 'My News' section, you can select 'Business' as a topic.

    Ashurst 2020/2021

Yep, I'd focus on those areas. Sometimes I see candidates also briefly cover why they are applying to Ashurst (which is not always the same thing as what makes Ashurst different to other firms), but I would keep this fairly concise if you do.

    Ashurst 2020/2021

The ‘legal landscape’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘legal issue’, but as Jess said, the focus of your answer should be on the impact on the legal market/sector. I’m not sure the presidential elections are a great topic to talk about, unless you feel it’s clearly going to answer the question. As a...

    Ashurst 2020/2021

As you said, I think the book is great to show how the legal world is changing. I’d just flag that people have been using the information from Tomorrow’s Lawyers to answer these questions for many years (all the way back since when I was applying). I think it’s a good starting point but I’d...

    Ask A Graduate Recruiter Anything!

Agreed - I think many candidates decide they want to pursue a career in commercial law first, and then realise they don't have a convincing explanation for why. They then try to find 'impressive' reasons for wanting to become a commercial lawyer, or adapt someone else's answer and try to apply...

    Ask A Graduate Recruiter Anything!

It took me a very long time (years) to get my 'why commercial law?' answer down and even then I changed it many times. I think it's one thing to know why you want to be a commercial lawyer and another thing to convincingly justify your reasons on paper. That takes a lot of deep thinking and will...

    Show me the basics...

We’re a bit lacking in beginner resources at the moment, so the link Jess added above is probably your best bet. A big welcome to the forum and corporate law though. It can seem quite overwhelming to start with, so do feel free to post any more questions in this thread if you have some.
