This seems to be more of an impact from gov regulation than the development of online platforms, but still worth flagging up: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48868335.
'William Hill plans to close about 700 betting shops across the UK, putting 4,500 jobs at risk'.
I'll come back to your first question later but just to share some thoughts on your LinkedIn point --
LinkedIn is a really great way for TCLA to connect with students and share our content with people we might not normally be able to reach. That said, I don't think the main news feed is very...
Yes definitely. A couple of firms may not be worth doing (e.g., A&O have historically reviewed vac scheme apps quite early - not sure about training contracts), but it's hard to say what other firms are like that. The other thing to flag up is if it would prevent you from applying for a TC later...
Hi Eamon, have you been to any firm events or open days?
Edit: I've just seen you said you have. It sounds like you have a good range of experiences and you've got more law-related experience than some people I've spoken to. Work experience does help but a lack of it shouldn't be detrimental to...
Trainee Talk Episode #7: How to Develop your Commercial Awareness - is now live!
In this episode, I spoke with Peter Watson who worked as a stockbroker for 13 years in London and Tokyo, and advised some of the world’s largest financial institutions on investing in the UK, European and Japanese...
I realised I hadn't shared this in the forum, so let me re-post it here. These are just suggestions and not exhaustive:
What can you do right now to prepare for summer training contract interviews?
1. Develop your commercial awareness
A. Spend 15 minutes every day to read highlights of the...
I don't know much about how it works in practice (I didn't get that far and it's often quite hush-hush), but I imagine you can. I think it just depends on whether you're happy to go to a different area, whether they have space and whether they want you in their team.
It could be just an anomaly. That's magnified when a firm takes on few trainees, which often makes it seems worse than it really is. It could just be the case that too many trainees applied to the same department and one or two didn't quite cut it. If that's the case, it's not a big deal...
I agree with all of the above. You did allude to this, but I'd also add that you need to clearly demonstrate your motivation for commercial law. If you do this well, you can somewhat make up for limited commercial/legal work experiences, especially if you are applying for a vacation scheme. You...
That's horrible - I feel for you! I'l leave it to others to comment on prep time, but the good thing is there should be plenty of overlap in your prep, especially competencies/motivation for commercial law/commercial awareness provided they are both interviews. In theory, you may also be able to...
Yep it's good to use phrasing like that to demonstrate you've answered the second part of the question. You can add the words: 'I believe' to make it a little less forward.
Here is our Brexit cheatsheet!
On w/c 1 July, we’ll be releasing our next course: ‘The Aspiring Lawyer's Guide to Brexit’. This will be available to premium subscribers. For this course, we’re partnering with Peter Watson, a former stockbroker and recruiter who has advised some of the world’s...
And Slaughters is the next firm in the magic circle to up its pay (92k): https://www.legalcheek.com/2019/06/slaughter-and-may-raises-newly-qualified-salary-to-92k-plus-bonus-in-deal-that-sees-it-join-the-100-club/
Welcome Rick, as Dan said if you ever have questions, feel free to create a post and we'll do our best to help. And don't worry we can work on your commercial awareness :)
I am actually no longer working at my law firm, I definitely couldn't balance the two!
Michael Gove has just been eliminated from the race. After Sajid Javid's elimination this morning, it's now for party members to decide between Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson.
