I would probably apply for the open day first and then if you got the open day apply shortly after it (would still have 4-6 weeks before the deadline). If you didn’t secure the open day, you could the apply in late November which would be very much ahead of the vast majority of applicants.
Slaughter and May
Gibson Dunn
Skadden (although you also have to provide your extracurriculars and positions of responsibility as separate questions - but effectively a longer cover letter format)
Norton Rose Fulbright
Freshfields (personal statement, but effectively like a cover letter)
Travers...
Their self-study course is really for lawyers qualified in another jurisdiction or those who have significant experience working in law firms. If you are just coming out of the PGDL, then their SQE Prep course for law graduates is likely to be the best option for you but this is a four-month...
I generally don't think this is needed as this information is generally elsewhere in your application - lots of people do use these intros though and its not a problem to do so.
References really don't matter in all honesty - I wouldn't worry to much about who you choose. Just be mindful that...
I would recommend looking at this post from @James Carrabino - https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/converting-your-vacation-scheme-into-a-training-contract-top-tips-in-2021.3454/post-112085
James is proof there are those success stories!
Be mindful that the question is asking you to explain what you want to gain from the open day not what you already know about the firm. So think more about what you are keen to learn more about rather than stating what you already know. For instance, do you want to learn more about the Corporate...
That’s a perfectly reasonable explanation/reason for applying to an open day. Just try to explain what specifically you are looking to learn more about - also try to ensure there is more about that specific firm rather than just the career more generally (eg why are you applying to their open...
Personally, I prefer B, although the occasional highlighted skill when it isn't obvious is ok. A recruiter can read in time management skills if you have had a heavy workload or worked to tight deadlines, they can see when you have worked in a team, so saying you developed teamworking skills is...
The percentile will be looked at as a whole, but how that percentile could be calculated could be different if the firm weights different question styles differently.
Therefore with the example above, if the firm weighted deductions less than other questions, your percentile is likely to be...
1) Because you have to pay the recruiter for anyone you hire via them, you don't if someone applies directly. Using a recruiter typically guarantees you quality of shortlisted candidates though if you are concerned your direct applicants weren't going to meet your requirements.
2) If the...
They are not an absolute must unless the firm is very conservative. I tend to advise taking one anyway (if you have one) and you can always take it off/carry it/leave it at reception.
It will depend on the firm’s policy - most will allow you to reapply, but some may ask you to wait for a certain period of time or to apply to a different type of vacancy. It’s always worthwhile checking with the individual firm
1) I’d include my name as part of the sign off for the cover letter section
2) There is no need to do this where it is not an attachment and is effectively just a free text box
3) Yes - I would include years you did these activities to ensure it is clear what you did and when.
Not necessary eliminate - it could just be to help categorise people though. You could ask the firm to check why they ask this though - very legitimate question to ask graduate recruitment at a law fair or online webinar.
I would assume so - obviously, the GDL doesn't work on the same grading basis, but I would assume they mean 60% or above in these modules.
Out of interest, which firm is asking this question?
I don't think it means anything, unfortunately. There are a whole host of reasons why someone may hear back quicker than you - I would just sit it out for a couple of more weeks, and follow up in early October if you haven't heard back by then.
I would say it doesn’t need to be more than a page long, with a formal cover letter structure.
And then cover the three following aspects:
- Why the firm
- Why the opportunity (eg why a role in that department/team/practice area)
- Why you
(doesn’t necessarily have to be in that order).
If...
Definitely not too late to apply for A&O winter’s scheme - most people won’t have applied yet - most will apply once they are back at university and the firm is doing campus events etc.
My general rule of thumb is to try and apply in the first two thirds of an application window. I am not sure...
