Hey Jonty,
Good to see you on here. I'm very interested in this area and your thoughts. The bigger UK firms (and some US firms) appear to be racing to adopt new technologies/AI.
Let's take three of the magic circle:
A&O
Built its own tech incubator, Fuse
Made an equity investment in...
Ok so this question seems to be a favourite at assessment centres this year. I’ll try to give a quick run through of the main issues. There’s plenty of things I’ve missed out so I may cover this in a future guide.
Who is raising interest rates?
That’s the central bank. Almost every country...
Hey GD - what press have you been following exactly? And what topics do you find difficult to understand?
I can give you some pointers to start:
Plans to raise interest rates in the US
Trump doing trump things (but also good wage and job growth in the US)
Toys R Us and Maplin heading into...
Hey all - I'm happy to say we've got a bunch of trainees who've offered their time for this week!
Nicole Shroff will be joining shortly to answer your questions. She's a trainee at Latham & Watkins and has just started in her fourth seat (debt capital markets).
To kick us off, Nicole - can...
It's a great idea!
When it comes to Toys R Us, I'm not saying I predicted it - but check out the cartoon in our private equity guide ;).
If anyone has any questions about some of the topics above i.e. administration/interest rates/Brexit, feel free to fire away.
Hey :) I'm sorry to hear that. If it's any consolation I've been there and I know many others have too.
I don't think that approach is right - firms with smaller intakes than 20 could still recruit a good number of direct applicants, which would make it worth applying. If you want to base it...
Welcome Nick! That looks like a fantastic day, especially the Nivaura session (I was just writing about Fuse!).
A few tips:
Smile! Be personable and (try to ) relax when you're speaking to GR/lawyers at the firm.
Prepare questions that you can't find online. Good genuine questions can make...
Hey all,
I've broken the once-a-week rule already as Amy Hillier has kindly offered to answer your questions this week. She's a future trainee at Clifford Chance and is helping me put together a very comprehensive interview guide - we'll be running through about 200 interview questions and how...
Great advice. I'd add that it helps to see networking as a way of genuinely getting to know people. I think that goes a long way and it makes it much more enjoyable.
Hey guys, welcome to the site :).
I'm Jaysen, the founder of The Corporate Law Academy. I did my undergrad in law at LSE and the LLM at Cambridge where I specialised in corporate law. Before starting the site, I was a trainee at Weil Gotshal & Manges.
Interesting fact: I have a (giant)...
Hmm the magic circle law firms are very different from each other (same with the US firms). This'll be clearer to see when our insights page is up. But if I could generalise, I'd say US firms have:
less formal training and more on-the-job training
fewer trainees compared to the magic circle law...
Hey Jess, I actually just responded to someone on TSR with this question! I'll copy over my thoughts:
"I'll qualify all of the advice I'm about to give by saying things may have changed since!
So first I’ll start with the assessments:
Business Discussion: They sent us the first assessment a...
I used to find that tough too. The way I used to approach it was to choose a handful of similar firms that I'd also applied to. That way if they asked why, I could justify my reasons.
Hi all,
Each week we run an ask me anything thread featuring a trainee/associate/partner at a City law firm. Today I'd like to welcome Rayhaan Vankalwala, a current trainee at US firm Morrison & Foerster. He has kindly offered to answer any of your questions this week, so feel free to ask him...
Hey guys,
A bunch of you mentioned you'd like to see an example of a successful application.
I attach images of my training contract application to Allen & Overy. There's quite a number of things I'd change now, but I hope it helps you work out whether you're going in the right direction. It's...
