Get Everything You Need to Secure a Training Contract
Now half the price. Join TCLA Premium for £30/month and get step-by-step application support, daily commercial awareness practice, and 700+ successful examples of past applications and interview experiences. Plus so much more.
In this interactive session, Maya Shah, Senior Early Careers Specialist at Ropes & Gray, will walk you through every stage of the firm's application process.
Willkie’s new graduate recruiter and two trainees will break down what the firm looks for at the interview stage, common pitfalls to avoid,
and how you can demonstrate confidence, clarity, and genuine motivation throughout an assessment centre.
I’d wait until you know whether you are invited to the next stage of the process, and then update them at that point if needed.
At that stage you should definitely inform them though.

Hi @futuretraineesolicitor
The question is ultimately the same, but you just don’t need to go into an explaining of why the story interests you.
It doesn’t have to have a massive impact on the firm or clients. It can just be something that does impact them in some way. For instance, does it...
Some firms will have a strict AAB (or higher) requirement. However this is a minority of firms. In addition, those firms with a strict requirement will still consider mitigating circumstances and can look beyond the grades in situations where a candidate has clear circumstances that impacted...
You are unlikely going to need to do a full PGDL. When the GDL was a requirement, Scots law students typically had exemptions on most modules (land law + one other module was only needed), and so personally I would have thought just going straight to the LLM in legal practice would be sufficient...
It is not a silly question - I know it must be causing some concern.
I don’t think it’s a case if you automatically losing your TC though - however it might just be that they have to defer your start date by six or twelve months, purely because you can’t start the GDL in the September.
I would...
I'd personally call them if you can.
But if you want to rely on email (and even if you did speak to them, you'd need to follow up with something in writing), it just needs to simply state you are withdrawing your acceptance for the programme and will therefore no longer be joining the firm on X...
Calls get missed all the time. I wouldn’t worry about this. Things like this don’t get recorded. Even if they did you could check their data retention policy as to how long such data would be stored for - for many firms that is only 12 months anyway.
But I really don’t see it being recorded...
There goes my theory that they would find it difficult to fill ACs. I hope they are giving some people some flexibility with dates though as for many people it literally couldn't be a worse time to go into AC prep.
Mid to late May might be a bit ambitious for them. Lots of people are in the midst of exam season and won't necessarily be available over the next few weeks.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is more likely to happen in early June..
1) you could technically complete all your qualifying work experience before sitting SQE 1 and SQE2 - it is just many firms are being exceptionally risk adverse (as usual) and making future trainees do both SQE1 and 2 before starting.
2) Many firms are still putting non-law trainees through the...
That is a possibility - it really just depends on a whole load of variables you will have no influence or control over. It could happen but at the same time it might not.
What I would stress is I know that 2025 seems like an awful way off right now, but it will actually come around quite...
Wow - that was quick! I am assuming this relates to your post about being asked to be considered for a direct TC process from last week?
Ultimately that is amazing news and a massive congratulations to you!
Hi everyone,
For anyone who made applications for vacation schemes or training contracts in the last 12 months, I'd be grateful if you could answer the following polls for us:
How many vacation scheme offers have you received in the last 12 months?
How many training contract offers have you...
