In this interactive session, Maya Shah, Senior Early Careers Specialist at Ropes & Gray, will walk you through every stage of the firm's application process.
Willkie’s new graduate recruiter and two trainees will break down what the firm looks for at the interview stage, common pitfalls to avoid,
and how you can demonstrate confidence, clarity, and genuine motivation throughout an assessment centre.
If there are ultimately firms you want to work for that you haven't secured VS with and can apply this year to, then I would recommend doing so. It just sounds like you can be selective as to who those might be given your three+ vacation schemes you have coming up, and given how busy you will be...
Hi @summer207 - I’m obviously not @AvniD but thought I would respond.
If you want to stay in the U.K. your options would be to go on to do further study and obtain another student visa, find a role that will support you with a skilled persons visa or apply for the graduate visa.
Many...
I would reply back and confirm you’d like to be considered for a direct TC and ask if there is any further information you can provide to support your application.
I don’t think it’s a standard rejection. There will be plenty of people they won’t be encouraging to reapply for a TC.
How many people they send such an email to is difficult to tell though. But if they are sending it, I’d encourage you to consider the direct TC route/application.
The process will often be frustrating for the recruiter too.
Unless they are exclusively recruiting for the role (unlikely), the role could be filled by other agencies or even be filled internally or by direct applicants by the firm.
They often don’t have an update because the client hasn’t...
Technically I would consider a news story to be slightly more specific - e.g. an article about something particular rather than something that went over a long period of time. So to me a commercial issue is something broader that has probably multiple elements to it (and therefore lots of news...
I'd ring the firm you have been offered and explain you will be declining the offer. You can email the firm you are still interviewing with and just explain you are withdrawing from the recruitment process (unless you have an interview scheduled in the next 3 days, then I would call just to make...
Just say you’d like to attend your graduation and give the date you’d need off, and ask whether they can approve the time off ahead of the scheme so you can make plans accordingly.
Keep the tone light and make sure it doesn’t sound like you expect the time off. You may also want to reference...
I’d let the mum know.
There’s no conflict of interest unless you are still working for them at the time of the scheme. And even then there might not be one.
I don’t think there is any stress/issue here. Just would be odd to not let the Mum know. She’d feel a bit odd about it if she bumped into...
It’s slightly different as most of the schemes I have run have only been three weeks max. As it’s slightly longer, this becomes less of an issue as you will accumulate at least two days of annual leave for each month you work.
It’s a tricky one - it’s not to say you can’t take it off but if you...
I wouldn’t say it is normal actually. Most of the interns I have known have worked their birthdays unfortunately, so it’s not really a request I have ever had.
How long is your internship?
I would ask Vero as they will be able to confirm what they need or not, and what is sufficient from this particularly firm’s perspective. I suspect the scanned copies will be sufficient if they are on school recognised papers, but really only Vero can confirm this. It may be the case they don’t...
Agree with this - you don’t necessarily have to always provide details of how many people you were up against. Numbers only tell one element of how well you did.
Just in case it is of interest to anyone, and for those who don't follow me on LinkedIn, I recently wrote this article about TCLA, how we operate and why I am involved.

It sounds strange, but I always found pubs the quietest place to work. Much quieter than coffee shops.
A few pubs have even started to think about this and offer unlimited free soft drinks/coffee, lunch and book you tables near power sockets.
I regularly used to use one of my local pubs this...
The course might only be running in London though - it really depends on who their provider is and how the course is delivered.
You can ask during the recruitment process though or when offered what their stance is on these things.
